The CHP Cadet Bulletin says the severity and frequency of use and the length of time since the drug use are considered. It's not all black and white and they go case by case is what a recruiter told me. For anybody that wanted to know.
I'm about to start the application process myself and I think I'll be done with school by end of Spring or by the end of Summer latest. I'm hoping the timing could work out so that I finish school and go to the Academy in Summer or Fall - I'm not sure what the cycles are. I hope I can get in

I got to talk to some officers and asked lots of questions. I needed to do that to be totally sure this is what I wanted - this is definately for me! I submitted my application this morning
I had school all day so I'm going to call the local office tomorrow morning to schedule a ride along. Unfortunately, the testing cycle is going to be quaterly from now on so I have to wait until Oct for the next written test. After that, hopefully things will start to move along faster.

I know a guy that is in the Academy right now, he is about 3 months in. A friend and his twin brother just met their background investigator last week, and I have my PAT this Saturday and the QAP on the following Monday. Things seem to be moving fast but I'm in for a long wait, I've heard that there has been a back log of applicants and I could be waiting for a very long time to get in. Anyone else hear the same?

Wow, that is the exact opposite of what you want to do.
I was in the process of applying but I messed up a few months ago and did some "things" that would be frowned upon... I figure I will wait at least a year or so and then consider applying. Thinking of getting my Guard card in the mean time.

I completely understand. I should of mentioned I have been in the background investigation phase for about two months. Like Rel has said if you want the real info just talk to the Recruiters. Good luck to you when you apply.

I do not know specifics of back log, but I do know that classes at the CHP Academy are getting smaller. So all you future applicants, there will be lots of applicants for less spots, so good luck and be patient.
The Academy had been starting classes of 240 for a while, and now they are going back to more normal class sizes
Oh, and no, we are not shutting down, and there is not a hiring freeze in the works.

more like DQed for telling the truth. i did some recreational experimentation in HIGH SCHOOL - i applied when i was 24...a full 5 or 6 years after all that
the CHP want nice and sober silly mamas boys that havent smoked weed in at least 3 years, and have NEVER done any 'hard' drugs (LSD, X, heroin)... but i've known or heard of many former coke heads getting accepted - so i guess coke is OK

Why do you chose to talk about things you clearly do not know of what you speak?
Just because you didn't get hired, doesn't mean you should bash all the good men and women who have been.
The departments position on drug use is very clear, we don't tolerate it. If people don't like it, apply elsewhere.
