When should I apply for CHP?

Did you call and ask a background investigator, and ask them what the policy is?

I did and she didn't really want to tell me. She informed me that they cannot give that information out and it is a case by case basis. I am just going to wait it out a bit and let some time separate the events and go from there. It was somewhat recent anyways... Stupid move but I cant do anything about it now...

gotNINJA, care to explain?

Sure. The polygraph is a decent interrogation tool, and when applied as such can yield quality results more often than not. However, in pre-employment scenarios it's grossly inaccurate becuse it does NOT detect lies. All it does is monitor your physiological signals which are then interpreted by a person. It is not scientific and every person sends out different signals. There is no template for an honest response nor is there one for a liar. Above all the actual test is biased against honest people. You go in and answer honestly, the polygrapher thinks/pretends to see something. Asks you if there is anything you have yet to disclose because the reading "look funny." you being an honest person start frantically searching your memory for anything and everything only to realize your palms are sweaty and your heart rate is up. And when you're asked again the polygrapher sees your reaction and deems you a liar and you're out of a potential job.

I have taken a polygraph and I have passed but I whole heartedly believe the polygraph is highly outdated and inherently inaccurate in detecting deceit.

CHP does not use a polygraph. They use a voice stress analyzer.

more like DQed for telling the truth. i did some recreational experimentation in HIGH SCHOOL - i applied when i was 24...a full 5 or 6 years after all that

the CHP want nice and sober silly mamas boys that havent smoked weed in at least 3 years, and have NEVER done any 'hard' drugs (LSD, X, heroin)... but i've known or heard of many former coke heads getting accepted - so i guess coke is OK :rolleyes

The funny part is how many cops are beating their wives, planting evidence, etc.

Those guys aren't going to want to work with someone who is always honest. So tell the truth, except when you shouldn't.

I am not sure how long the hiring process takes. However, I am about 5 or 6 months in total. Its been 3 months since I turned my PHS in and I still do not have a BI assigned yet.

Yeah, about that... give it some time. As for total time from first app to hire letter is about 12-15 months.

I honestly thought it would go faster with my QAP interview score. I guess there isnt any type of ranking or grouping. Its just when your app comes up it gets worked on.:nerd

Well the CHP process for me took about 6-8 months total from when I applied to get my acceptance letter, but with the classes being cut down now, I'm not sure how it's affected the new applicants. Good luck to all of you guys and gals who plan on giving it a shot. I'll be looking forward to it :teeth

Your QAP score has nothing to do with your background. What did you score?

I was thinking that since the QAP is 100% weighted that BI's would be assigned based on whoever scored the highest. Therefore, you would move along in the process faster.

I scored a 95% on my QAP.

Nope.

Once they establish the cut off line, everyone above the line moves on. You get to take a number and wait it out.

The QAP is a pass or fail part of the application process. As long as you pass the cut-off point, that's all they care about. So good luck. :Popcorn

I thought the same thing as well. I was told the better you score on your QAP , the sooner they start your packet. I was recently informed that is not correct. They get a stack of packets and start working through them. Some packets might get picked over others if they seem quicker to complete.

Anyways, like you, Im waiting to start backgrounds. I was told it could still be a few months. They are really backed up right now. As the other Officers mentioned, with smaller class sizes now, it will take longer to get accepted to the academy. Ive been waiting almost 3 months. My QAP and PAT were done in the middle of June. Fortunatley I have a good job, so I'll wait it out as long as it takes. Though, I am very anxious and it seems like it is still so far away. I know it will be worht the wait though. Until then, run and run some more.lol

I remember those days, just keep up the hard work and try not to worry to much. Good luck :thumbup

I am in the same boat. I took the written in March and my BI told me if all goes well I am slated for March2010 or June2010. Good luck in the process,

Cole

I just submitted my application for the CHP online. The recent talks of increasing UC fees by up to 30% encouraged me. I'll be piling on the units this year in an attempt to graduate a year early and avoid an additional $12k in loans.

I figure I'll just keep whichever questions I have regarding the application process in this thread to keep from filling up the LEO forum.

First question (which may seem stupid): how hard is it to get a felony? I've noticed such a charge is immediately disqualifying. More specifically, can I get a felony for speeding? Speed limits are the only laws (I know) I break. I'm not doing 150 down the freeway during rush hour, but I do have the occasional burst of speed down a back road. Can a heavy speed violation turn into a felony, given that it's only for speeding?

Second question: will I be require to note any parking tickets I've received? It says all citations and traffic tickets, but I'm not sure if parking tickets fall under those categories.

They never asked me about any parking violations during my BI with sfpd. Departments don't really care if you forgot to put an extra quarter that one time, it doesn't say anything bad or good about you. Movers on the other hand can show important qualities of lack there of: speeding, no insurance, no registration/expired, dui, reckless driving... is what they are interested in.
