Worst Cycle Gear Experience Ever ~ Modesto ~

A couple of years ago I stopped by the local Pleasanton Cycle Gear to pick up two Battery Tender plugs that attach directly to the battery. It seems like they had always had them in stock, but didn't have any at the time. I was told they would have some on Thursday, so come back. I came back and was told "oh, I meant next Thursday". I think I stopped back for about two more weeks and they never did get any in.

So the store manager removed two from the Battery Tenders that they had for sale and sold those to me at the same price. He could restore those kits to full completeness on "Thursday" when they finally got some in.

So some stores will take stuff out of stock that are part of a larger package, but you might have to come back a few times first. And one of those two that I bought is sitting out in my garage right now waiting for me to install it on my KTM. It takes me a while to get around to some things.

I've had mostly good experiences at CG Hayward going back 30+ years. The staff has changed many times completely since then. If they don't have what I want, I just order part & it typically comes in within a few days. Everyone seems friendly & eager to help you as you walk in. Can't get much better than that!

Sure beats the nearby dealer by a mile! Unfriendly folk.

I do not remember the gals name.. but had that same experience calling the San Jose Cyclegear number when i was looking for accessories for my GoPro.

I have only been back to CycleGear once since.

I ordered a tinted visor for my Shoei RF-1100, when I went to pick it up the girl gave me a tinted visor for a Shoei RF-1000 (didn't notice til I got home.) Though in her defense I did wait like, a week between when they called and told me it was ready and when I went to go get it.

I usually prefer to deal with Shawn at CG SJ, if you ever want to give them another chance talk to him.

Is East Bay Motorsports the nearby dealer?

J-Boat - I feel your pain having to drive all the way out there and then find out they don't have one in stock. I'm sure "Sam" made an honest mistake. Unfortunately, people do make mistakes. Sam has helped me before and I have never had any issues with her.

I have been shopping at Modesto Cycle Gear ever since it opened back in the early 2000s. I am from the Bay Area so it was beneficial for all central valley riders to have this store in our area. I know all the employees at this store and consider them as friends. I am down there every month but mostly more. I am always greeted with a "hello and a thank you for choosing Cycle Gear." Brandon has always helped me with my special ordering from their catalogs: Tucker Rocky and Parts Unlimited. I have never had a problem and the parts have always arrived at the specified time. Morgan is another employee who is always eager to help me out. Jen, the manager, is an amazing person. Always greets me with a smile and hello. I have never seen a rude side of her or even seen her angry. She is a motorcycle rider too and knows her stuff. I am sure she would have helped you out any way she could as long as it didn't violate any store policies. Unfortunately, if they don't have the part, then they don't have it. It was wrong of them to tell you they did. The practice of taking items out of boxes and selling parts wouldn't be right for the next rider who comes along. Modesto Cycle Gear is a great store to shop at.:thumbup

I hope you were able to find your master link.

crystal at the redwood city cg is hawt...!!!11

Agree with Mark, an excellent local resource. Sure, mistakes get made once in a while, but there I've always gotten the same respect I give.

I've gone in the Modesto CycleGear twice....After being there, long enough to see it was a lost cause, turned around and walked out....The second time was to confirm the first time wasn't a fluke.

It suits some, I guess...They can have it.

Oh yeah well I was looking for some new gloves and went to Cycle Gear and all they had were cheap poorly constructed BILT and Sedici...

I find that to be much more tragic..

Well, not much they could do. Seems a bit absurd for them to remove a master link from another product, but her being rude and the employee being an idiot are both reasons not to frequent Cycle Gear in Modesto.

I've had shops do this regularly to help me get back on the road, especially if they have multiple sizes of chains available.

I know its a drive but the Sacramento CG has always been good to me since they seem to always carry the most of everything. SF CG is my local shop and they have done me well same with san jose.

All this bitching about shops lately, a calm and respectful demeanor seems to sometimes resolves conflict better than anger. Sure, retailers should be able to smile and serve no matter how much shit they have to take, but they're only human.

Shhhhhhh!! You're not suposed to tell them that they're all a bunch of whiney, insatiable pricks that don't deserve a tenth of the respect normally given to pedophiles!

That was your point, right?

:laughing

A bad employee reflects poorly on the business itself. Our economy blows, so obviously we're all reluctant to spend money, so they should hire people who are respectful and responsible, regardless of how the consumer acts.

I'm certain everyone complaining was respectful and calm, at least to begin with, but if not, then that's another issue.

I have no idea how they approached the situation. None of us do. But if they were whiney pricks, who here wouldn't fight the urge to respond in kind? Personally, I don't have these problems. Just went for a trackday with the service guy from my local shop. He's getting some crashed levers replaced on warranty for me, also went to bat with Suzuki for me on fork seals, try and get those warrantied. Modesto Cycle Gear essentially gave me free boots. That was Brandon BTW. People skills. Respect. Jes sayin.

rant/

I called ahead to make sure they had a 530 rivet style master link in stock before I drove 30 miles. A female named "Sam" answered and after being on hold for several minutes came on to say, "We have several in stock, come on in"...

I arrive there to speak to "Jen" who I guess is the manager and she says, "Sorry, we only have 520 in stock, try Motoworld instead"...

I told her I already called ahead and spoke with "Sam" and she said you do have them, could you please double check? She just said that "Sam" was mistaken and she's not here. I then asked her if she could just take one out of a 530 chain box, which she had in stock. She rudely said, "No, how would I sell it then?" I told her she could just order it and replace it later and she still said no...

Her unfriendly attitude and tone of voice was very condescending and rude. She was the least helpful person I have ever encountered at a Cycle Gear to this day. I'll never go there again and I seriously advise you all to avoid that place...

Cycle Gear Pleasanton FTW...:thumbup

/rant:mad
perhaps she interpreted your attitude as rude also,I have never had a bad experience with any of them at all, especially her,:cool

for all who are complaining about the bad service, there is a simple fixgo apply for an open position there and lend your expertise to the sales of their stuff,:rolleyes
