Yay datacenters...driving up electricity costs

Exactly. Big tech.

We are in the demand supply chain of course assuming you use AI.

Between power and gasoline this State will suck a lot of people dry.

Everyone. ChatGPT apparently has 700M weekly active users. Gemini is used on every Google search. And I’m sure there are many other common use cases of this kinda of AI.
In my opinion having AI generated responses from search queries is forced enshitification. The everyday search on a search engine is now such trash thanks to advertising that AI results are what passes for a search result. Imho, no one asked for that. Im not convinced that 700m number is a reflection of what average people actually want. I think its a reflection of what we have to choose from.

I agree that no one asked for a worse product. But it hasn’t stopped the plebs from using it. No one has to use ChatGPT to write them a resume, or clean up an email, or summarize 100 websites to find some fake truth. But they are doing it en masse. Its easier than combing through Reddit, or leaning how to write well, or stressing over whether or not the email sounds unprofessional. Lazy and uneducated wins way too often.

I think that most people don't realize the huge amount of processing that it takes to run a medium level AI program, to them it's just available and the awareness stops there.

Also, the majority of internet traffic these days is automated - bots, software that posts for you, scraper robots, AI training, and prob more. No one is running a bot on their phone. You host it on AWS and give it a FB API key. This needs more datacenters to expand.

Lol I already pay like .5 kwh per hour when the national average is .18

I am already 300%+

Meanwhile my city was melted by the tubbs fire and our pge rates have continuously get jacked higher while the new pge CEO gets more and more $

IMO, the biggest issue with the data centers is their water usage. it’s obscenely high. not sure that’s on the radar of those ares that are welcoming them. don’t come crying later after you finally figure it out.

Data centers, water and power required.
Some are talking about enlarging the atomic plant they have in Az.
last nite something about portable nuclear power plants for each data center.
Maybe a portable nuclear water well too?

I don't really understand this. I'm I a luddite to think that the majority of internet traffic being non human is a bad thing?

Automated internet traffic is not inherently good or bad. You gotta decide on a case by case basis. WindyApp ingesting NOAA weather data daily to keep your app up to date - good? Putin having a software team to automate the liking, reposting, and commenting of anything that pushes his agenda - good for him, bad for…

I’d love for human spaces on the internet to ban or severely restrict automated traffic. I think humans would be far less manipulated by anything. But that’ll never happen without legislation because the manipulation increases engagement, which is good for the platforms. And you couldn’t just limit “bad” bots because how tf do you define bad.

There should be a calculated "price tag" listed in a sidebar for each prompt entered.

It’d be a guess, one that is easily manipulate by the platform. See the water video above for good reasons why.

Also, this would add a cost before you even hit submit.

Here’s some good info on the water issue. Plenty of nuance here.

I love Hank. I get even his laundry sheets from the good store. I think I have seen that clip but its worth watching again because there is a ton of nuance involved. IIRC the water usage is more problematic in arid regions.

I agree. Look at all the AI-generated short films on Youtube. Some of them get millions of views. It proves people are perfectly willing to accept "AI slop" instead of "real" art. Call them low-IQ or lazy all you want, but there's no stopping it.

Also even if you personally don't use AI apps, you are still benefitting from companies and organizations that do, whether it's to streamline their operations, perform R&D, sequence DNA, or whatever

And it's not just data centers that use a lot of power. How about factories, I'm pretty sure they use a lot of power too. Should you get a break on your power bill just because you don't buy anything from those factories? How about healthcare? Pretty sure MRIs use a lot of power.

Agreed. AI uses the processing that it needs at the time of running. It would be very difficult (using processing time) to even predict a range prior to running it.

One thing that should be done for all google searches is to require an opt-in for including AI in the search. That would significantly reduce the demands with AI.
