ZRX 1200 - opinions?

Great bikes :thumbup my brother had one and rode the tits off it. As other have said, they are well respected have a huge following and aftermarket parts are available.

The ZRX is an awesome bike, almost as good as a 1st generation Bandit. :)

I rode 23k miles on my zrx1100 since I bought it feb 2011.

In that time I've decided....this is absolutely the last time I'll buy a motorcycle with CV carbs. I focking hate them. HATE.

mine is jetted with POD filters. I also have a full muzzy exhaust system.

ZRX is EASY in terms of maintenance. valve adjustments are easy. the valve cover gasket even seals after multiple R&Rs.

it's a very comfortable bike. I have a GIVI tall windscreen. the seat to peg distance is short so if you're over 6' tall you might find it uncomfortable (YMMV).

the suspension is pretty lame too. you'll need fork springs unless you weight 150. shocks are rebuildable. I have springs/racetech reb valves in the forks and ohlins shocks.

FS 03 ZRX12 low miles can deliver to Barber trackday

Saw this on the ZRXOA.ORG site today; fly out to Birmingham & ride home?

FS 03' ZRX12 low miles can deliver to Barber trackday

2003 ZRX1200, 4436 miles, Blue, basically stock, with many new parts.

Not cosmetically perfect, but very nice looking bike. Asking $ 3500 negotiable.

I love this bike, but have too many projects and need to get rid of some things. Also...I might could sell you some leathers for the track day, and I will be selling my BMW G450X dual sport (dirt bike).

Located in Birmingham AL. Can deliver to track day at Barber Motorsports Park this weekend. Save room in your trailer to take this one home.

send pm or email rfcustmcyc at charter dot net

(Just an FYI....)

I wonder if the woman who parked her ZRX last night right next to my bike at the grocery store last night , is going to be reading this thread.
Probably not.
Hey, at least it's SF, you actually see other bikers in town.

Ok so..what's the deal with the carbs. That's my main concern. DO you not like rideability or the maintenance? I want my bike to pull hard off idle

Had a ZRX1200 and really miss it. Fun reliable bike with a brute of an engine. Everyone I know who ditched the airbox and went with pod filters had jetting issues. Everyone who kept the airbox never mentioned any carb issues, including me. I had the Ivan's jet kit with full Muzzy system.

Unless, you're drag racing, there is no need for the pods. The bike is a beast with over 80 ft-lbs of torque available from 3,000 to over 9,000 rpm.

I always like what Kawi did with the ZRX's underseat storage...since they went with twin rear shocks instead of the typical one rear shock, this freed up a ton of space behind the engine under the seat. So the underseat storage space is incredible!

eastbaydave, I first rode a ZRX1100 in 1997, got you beat by two years. :laughing

it's mainly rideability during different temps and altitudes.

two of my friend also have ZRXs. each one of us had some misfire/bog/surging at one time or another. we all buy fuel from local top tier gas stations with lots of traffic.

we have either dynojet or ivan (or brock?) jet kits

one bike gets bogged down accelerating. this issue comes and goes.

2nd bike became almost unrideable at one point. had to take the carb apart and clean. also get some issues from time to time.

mine surges sometimes when cold. a few bouts of misfiring/surging when warm.

with ethanol mixed gasoline you don't want to let fuel sit for more than a couple weeks without treatment.

I want my bike to pull hard off idle

then you want fuel injection!

Absolutely nothing wrong with carburetors.

I've owned carb bikes i.e., Maxim, EX500, etc., and really nothing wrong but no argument FI is far superior i.e., less hassle, less maintenance.

From my experience carbureted bikes are fine; usually the on/off throttle response is better than fi. But, if you add a hot rod pipe, and need ta re-jet, then fi is better. (You can just plug a 'puter in the thang and make ye adjustments, as opposed to have'in ta pull the carbs, and re-jet each one) Also, if you plan on riding in the Sierras, the fi will adjust better at altitude.

Eastbaydave has one. They look sexy and conjure Eddie Lawson !
Edit
And im waaaaay late...

If you find one go for it. I've had mine for a few years now and have put quite a few miles on it. The bike never fails to put a big smile on my face in other words its a keeper. Reliability is excellent the thing is solid and reasonably easy to maintain.

I just looked at one in the South Bay. Its salvagedbut pretty clean custom paint, heated grips, exhaust and jet kit.

Only problem is...blown fork seals. I tried to inspect the forks but couldn't see any sign of damage so I'm hoping its just the seals. But worst case I'm thinking new fork legs.
She's asking $3200. I was hoping to steal it for $2500-2700. But I didn't even get around to making an offer. Should i bother with this one?

$3200 for a salvaged one with blown fork seals? keep looking else where....

I have a 2001 bought new and have had 0 issues in almost 50k just normal wear items and maintenence which I always do myself.
piped and jetted with Ivan's and muzzy runs great, ridden from sea level to over 10,000ft and with no problems.
Torque is awesome, from idle to redline and with it uncorked a very nice top end rush, average is 125-135 hp.:teeth
