ZRX 1200 - opinions?

Sounds great, but the only thing i'm willing to modify on it is getting a bigger windscreen. So that 2 thousand dollar suspension is a no-go for me
Well, 13 years ago when I did those mods used Ohlins were $400, & the RT stuff was ~$200. So I was happy w/$600 worth of mods.

The stuff above in the pic was done for under $1K recently (used parts.) A lot of people are doing the ZX14 front ends as they work great! The cheaper folks are doing ZX9 front ends (plus the zx9 forks are 1" longer= more height adjust-ability.) All you have to do is press on the "stem" to the new triple-clamps, & swap bearings accordingly.

Again, it's not absolutely necessary as the stock suspension is FULLY adjustable for most people. But if you want to do trackdays/hard-charging twisties, then you need to pay the price. Again, this is simple, & you'd have to do same for most bikes, right?

FYI, I've seen people at trackdays w/stock suspension many times. I'm talking mods for only the few HIGH-END riders who can take advantage of great suspension. Many do not have that ability...& that's ok. But if you want the "outer-limits" of suspension control, you buy aftermarket high-quality stuff.

I hope you understand the difference of what I'm saying...

Zrx forks just need new springs and maybe rebound valves. Shocks can be rebuilt with heavier fluid for 150-200. Dave moss knows these bikes

FYI. I bought my 2000 Zrx w/ 16k miles in 02/11 for $2500. It needed a carb rebuilt ($150). It was a great deal and I got lucky. You can find them for 3k but probably not in ca

Had one for 22 k mi then went to a KTM 990 adv after 17 K mi selling the 990 and hoping for another ZRX :ride

Keep in mind that the suspension is the best thing that you can do to any ride. Forget the motor, do the legs.

There are a couple of ways to handle this. Brand new is easiest. Then, as Dave suggested, used. That can be problematic as you have to be "in the right place at the right time".

The 3rd option is where the forums come into play.

On the FZowners forum, theres a member who makes a custom top shock mount so that you can use a stock R1 shock on the FZ1.
$75 for the mount, and $40 shipped for a '08 R1 shock w/5K miles (includeing clevis & bones), and I have a much better handeling mount. And that shock is rebuildable.

Ended up going with a ninja 650.

I LOVE the engine. 60hp has never felt so punchy. It rides like a thumper. Came with a Leo Vince pipe and it sounds awesome too. Perfect city get-around bike. I'm gonna mount my Givi topcase on it and get a new windscreen as the wind protection is absolutely crap.
Its funny how a shitty little parallel twin provides exactly what I needed. What a 180hp R1 and a 115hp Vstrom couldn't

:thumbup

woa! two completely different bikes from your original post. Glad you found what you like. I want the same engine you have, just in a Versys. Cant seem to find one:(

Middleweight bikes are famous for striking a good balance between power and handling.

Yeah..Versys are rare for sure. If I had found a versys i would have bought it. Someone posted a vstrom 650 on CL yesterday for $4300. That's a great buy as well

I see more and more Versys all the time, all 2009 models though (blue and green). The Versys is all the bike I will ever NEED and similar to what you said I will take 65 easily accessible hp over 100 hp and a peaky powerband. That said, the ZRX I rode had all the midrange you could ask for and I got off of it making the comment how stupid it is that any inexperienced rider can walk into a dealer and buy a bike with that kind of power. I have seen a used 2009 green Versys at a local dealer, but they are asking more for it than I paid for mine brand new 20 months ago. Guess that bodes well for resale if I ever lose my mind and decided to sell it.

A few Versi popped up right after I bought my bike. I bet you can get a pristine under $4k....maybe tough now that the sun is out. I wanted one.
