FINALLY - Lane Sharing is supported in CA

It is a double edged sword. THe bad with the concept moving from a grey zone to black and white means it can be legislated against/limited. Which is the biggest complaint from those complaining. The hard speed numbers etc do not bother me. As a driver of a car, someone sharing when we are going 50+ is totally uncalled for, for example. The areas where it will likely be allowed are probably the areas riders would normally share anyway, like multi lanes with room etc.

The good with it being on the books, is that it can enable true driver education and more and more people will be able to lose their attitude of 'damn renegade splitting biker' and hopefully change it to 'wow i wish i could ride a motorcycle so i could share and reduce traffic.'

I love it. I hope the rest of the motoring mass can come to accept it finally.

By your logic, driving is illegal, 'cause a cop can bust you for doing it unsafely.

Quit being a Debbie Downer, and enjoy sitting in traffic. I'll be one of the many riders safely and legally splitting past you. :wave

Who said anything about driving?

Didn't you say something about a last post? :twofinger

No kidding! :thumbdown Why don't you go find a negativity thread to enjoy. 99.99% of us are enjoying this positive news. I don't recall anyone posting/asking for a debate or a wet blanket on the :party.

I've been to other states where they are pretty hostile towards lane splitters. I doubt if it will ever go National.

Then why was this thread even started if you weren't expecting a legal/illegal vs an accepted way of doing things?

We already know that lane sharing is accepted in CA.
Lets celebrate when we finally make it law that it is ok to lane split without no consequence except for the riders life.

Dude...I couldn't say the words slow enough...

Thank you, point in case.

The phrase is "case-in-point".

And since you're clearly not paying attention, lane sharing on city streets is something the local citizens decide on, not the state. If a city wants to make lane sharing illegal, they can. They cannot do that for any state route or interstate though. There's a big difference. All the CHP support in the world doesn't matter when a city has created an ordinance to make lane sharing illegal.

Oh go eat your popcorn, Steve. :twofinger

FWIW, I've been stopped twice by SDSD for what they called an unsafe lane change...which was really just filtering up to a light. Never SDPD, just the sheriff's department. Never did get a ticket though. Weird.

Really? Seriously, really? Never heard of this.

This is such a great step. Thanks to all those that have contributed to it so far :hail

I think that as a driver, or a rider, I always believe that the "safe as conditions allow" rule is applicable. It usually won't work in my favor, though it has before in the past when I had to explain why I felt that taking a corner at what the officer felt was an unsafe speed, was ok because I was in a Camaro. I also know that doing the posted speed limit, can result in a ticket if the conditions do not allow that speed "safely".

I think motorcycles are given even more of a leeway when it comes to the "conditions allow" mentality on country roads, but in the city and highway conditions, I think it will also give a smaller leeway to us now. An officer can say, the "law" says that you can do 10mph over in traffic under 30 safely. To me that says that anything above/beyond that might not necessarily get me a ticket, but it gives the officer enough reason to pull me over should he choose. More importantly, if an accident were to happen, it gives that same officer the ability to point blame my way instead of the drivers because I was going 10+ or was sharing over 30mph...

Still though, this is awesome and it's very cool to me to see the Leo's support it, though I guess all being moto-riders they are probably biased :laughing

We have laws for what's illegal, not what's legal :laughing You have two cops here telling you you're wrong
I was about to say the same thing, but a cop saying that "if it isn't specifically illegal it's legal" is even better :rofl

Bravo and good work everyone!

I can't wait for the PR to really get moving on this. There was a recent link on the popular automotive blog jalopnik (I know there are a bunch of jalops in this board) to an episode of the motorcycle vlog Ride Apart re:lane splitting. It's scary how much vitriol there is even within the automotive enthusiast community against lane sharing (you'd think they'd be on our side!). A thumbs up from these organizations will surely help people's view of the practice!

Its been a long time coming. Its taken a lot of arm twisting, arguing, and frustration. But we have taken a huge leap forward.

You've never heard of a city enacting their own ordinances? :dunno

I'm not saying it has been done, I'm saying it can be done.

I'm pretty sure local jurisdictions need explicit permission to enact ordinances for areas state law already covers. For example, parking. Locals can pass ordinances cause there's a whole crapload of sections that explicitly let them do it.
