POLL: Should Motorcyclists be Allowed to 'Split Lanes' in CA?
Cody Kitaura, the Los Alamitos Patch Web News Network

Some drivers criticize the practice, and many don't know it's legal in California. Where do you stand? California is the only place in the country drivers will see motorcyclists squeezing through tiny gaps in traffic and not have to wonder if those riders will get a ticket moments later. It's the only state where "lane splitting," or the practice of riding between two cars, is legal (The CHP says so on its website). Three motorcyclists go on a 14-minute defense of the practice in a webisode of "RideApart" that was posted last week. "It's safer, it's more responsible," motorcycle journalist Wes Siler says in the video. "On a motorcycle, we don't have crumple zones. We don't have this built in safety, so we have to take control of that ourselves." He cites a study that says lane-splitting is safer than sitting in traffic because it reduces the risk of being rear-ended by a car."[A person in a car] can be a bad driver all she wants," he says. "It's my job not to let her run into me." Nearly 10,000 voters in a poll on autoblog.com were divided on the subject as of Wednesday night, with 50 percent saying they feel it's an unsafe practice and 43 percent saying they agreed with the practice. I've been riding a motorcycle for about eight years, and never knew this was such a controversial issue. But according to a California Office of Traffic Safety survey from 2012, only 53 percent of drivers know the practice is legal and 7 percent of drivers have tried to prevent it.

Mostly positive comments on the website so far. That.is good.

I found the vid by Ride Apart pretty well done.
Too long to share with most cagers, but still valuable info.

They provide several stats that sound great, but back up on those would be great (sources).
* reduction of traffic if 10% more drivers were on bikes.
* rear end stats between Cali and other States.

the two biggies for me.

Getting any media attention like the article is good. The more discussion out there will help raise awareness that it is OK for us to do in California.

Good to see a lot of it and I hope to see motorcyclist stay respectful in those discussions because the riders that have been super aggressive or blatantly dangerous doing it has certainly left a bad taste in the mouth of many motorists.

:wtf

How exactly does one "prevent" lane sharing? Opening your door?

Mostly move right or.left to block the rider.

Does the word permissible mean the same thing as legal? I don't see on the CHP website where they say it's legal but I do see where they say it's permissible. Semantics? :dunno

Also, I think that poll is slanted. I'd posit that those that voted no because they think it's unsafe are more likely voting no because they're pissed off that they have to sit in the traffic while the motorcycle can pass through.

Major props. Thank you. I don't split on the highway but being able to keep myself safe at redlights has been a major plus. Thanks for fighting.

I've heard of a door being opened...But...of all the stupids, I just have a hard time, wrapping my head around someone so stupid they want to have their door ripped off (course maybe the door was wrecked before, and they are looking for it getting replaced anyway).

More likely a Mental defect driver just drifts over to close the space, because they saw (or heard) Ya coming and thought...No way is that bike passing me.

Ahh...Mental defect can think that (and it has come up for me, on 101, near SF Airport)
But...Your on a bike. It goes, It stops, It slices, It Dices.

Keep a cool head, don't let emotions or crap, work your controls.

Wait a micro second if you have to, or find a different path if you have to..
Mental defect can not stop your split, ...might delay your split for a micro second..but BFD...You're making better time than the other options give.

You guys rock. I will put a post and linky on SBR when I am on a real computer. It would be good to spread this everywhere we can. Friendface?

It amazes me that some do not understand that when we help traffic flow better, it helps everybody.

Is it stated anywhere that you can legally chew bubble-gum? Is it stated anywhere that it is legal to chew bubble-gum and walk, at the same time? While certainly not illegal (meaning legal), I would advice against you trying the latter, just for safety reasons.

I especially like this part:

Messages for Other Vehicle Drivers

Lane splitting by motorcycles is not illegal in California when done in a safe and prudent manner.
Motorists should not take it upon themselves to discourage motorcyclists from lane splitting.

- Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal (CVC 22400).

- Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcycle is illegal (CVC 22517).

Thanks silver for all your hard work in this.

i was stopped by CHP lane splitting at 65 MPH. he said and i qoute "there is no laws prohibiting that" but its unsafe. ? he said that! he told me i will die if i clip a car which i know obviously. CHP was also riding moto.

If you are splitting lanes at 65 you may want to ask your self what the cage drive you just scarred the shit out of thinks of riders.:thumbdown

At that speed I have always been able to change lanes and move ahead if needed. Splitting at speed can undue all the hard work that went into getting the CHP to approve the guide lines.
