Dakar Rally time again

Do any of you know why they need three guys in the big trucks?

I understand they need one driver and one navigator, but what does the third guy do?

I'm quite impressed with the speeds those big trucks are able to maintain on a lot of the sections. I find all four classes interesting.

... I think the third guy in the truck is the mechanic ... :dunno

Bam Bam!

Honorary SFMC member Ace Cafe Rob says he's going
to try to show some European 2017 Dakar
coverage of stages 1-3 at the San Francisco Motorcycle Club
tonight starting at 7pm-ish ...

Whelp, spoke too soon ... Ace Cafe Rob sez
technical difficulties preclude tonight's
Dakar watching ... hopefully next week! :thumbup:party

Robby bailed this year, he was all grumpy last year calling out conspiracies in the judging. So he didn't come back.

They say that there's only one American in this year. It just seems to show that Americans don't race anything any more. QUOTE

Robby also has his hands full promoting his off road series.

My best in the desert team partner rode a bike in 07 and 09 and was the navigator in robbies second truck in 2011. The entry fee alone for the bikes is $25,000 then add on mechanic, hotels, spare motors, AIR line tickets and you can see why not to many Americans ride it. It's a sport for the rich or the fully sponsored

The wheels on those things are REALLY heavy, so a) to help with tore changes and b) he monitors the engine and other mech systems on the truck since both the other 2 have their hands full driving/navigating

Anyone know where I can watch this without having cable?

I can only find some highlights torrents and the redbull highlights.

If you know of a private tracker, I'll see the shit out of it if you send an invite.

Toby Price is out of Dakar and Honda may actually have a chance. I think KTM has won it the last 16 years or something like that.

... go Honda! :ride:party

... Team Honda didn't make it any
easier for themselves today ... :laughing

edit 1/6:
A crushing blow

[Team Honda Rider] Joan Barreda, the undisputed leader of the general standings yesterday [1/5] evening with a lead of more than 18 minutes, saw his hopes of keeping the lead cave in today. Firstly, the official HRC rider received a one hour time penalty for having refuelled outside the authorised zone yesterday, before having a hellish stage and getting lost after approximately 150 km of the special. The Spaniard lost 37 minutes to the day's winner and plunges down the general standings to 1 hour 12 minutes behind the leader [KTM mounted Brit, Sam Sunderland].

:(

... the good news is Mr. Sunderland is the fifth different winner in the first five moto stages
of the 2017 Dakar ... race director Marc Coma promised more traditional
navigation this year after criticism that the last few years have featured too
many WRC style special stages, which did not put a premium on navigation ...

I'd say Mr. Coma has delivered this year with the top three spots playing
musical chairs every day ... I think Sam was the only racer
not to have made a navigation error in today's bad-weather shortened stage ...

... lots of racing left ... anything may happen ...

Many Honda riders penalized 1 hour for an illegal fuel refill. Likely ending Honda's chance, while Husky is currently in the lead...

:mad:mad:mad

Thanks a lot, HRC! Now I love me some Pablo Quintanilla on his gleaming Husqvarna, but I was pretty excited to see Barreda riding wicked fast and relatively clean (compared to other years, anyway) only to have HRC pull a bone-headed move and hand all their riders an almost insurmountable 1-hour penalty! :mad They're lucky it wasn't the full 3-hour penalty! I think this was Barreda's race for the taking after Price went down with the broken femur. Now? I'm pretty sure it would take a fucking miracle. Honda really needs to get to the root of their management mystery problem and solve it before Honda pulls all their funding.

All 3 gals in the moto class are still at it!

Laia Sanz is running 26th, 2 hours and 8 minutes adrift of the leader.

Anistasiya Nifontova has her Husky in 82nd at 7h57m back.

Rosa Romero Font (Nani Roma's wife) is in 93rd at 9h19m off the pace.

The car gals are still in it, too (Reina in 35th and Gutierrez in 55th) and Liparotti is still going on her quad in 16th :thumbup

:thumbup Go Gals!
This stuff is so fun to watch. I wonder what the American viewership is.

Sadly, the American viewership isn't great. Part of that is, of course, that the coverage here is crap.
