1977 Suzuki GS750e w/ Yoshimura bits

@motopsycho
Threw a rod in 06 or 07... eastbound... IN THE TUNNEL. Had to run and push it a quarter mile out. Thank Jesus there was one of those pg&e trucks with the cherry picker on top. He turned his amber lights on like an angel and drove behind me so nobody ran me over. Worst part was breathing that tunnel air with the helmet on while trying to run this 500 lb thing out.

I was looking for pictures of it but these were all i could find.

So far something about a magneto and getting a battery eliminator. I'm thinking maybe I can find a super tiny battery and use it in conjunction with the charging system. I'm also planning on building my own wire harness for the bike once winter comes.
Thanks for the info, I will def look over that stator wiring.

'Not sure how well the magneto would work for your lighting. You may find that it won't give you the power you need at lower RPM's and your night lighting will suffer. Be sure before you go that route.

When wiring up a new harness, keep in mind that most bike manufacturers cut corners and improvements can be made not only to the wires and connectors themselves, but more importantly how it's all wired up. For instance, on my ST1100, the power for the alternator (automotive type without permanent magnets) Went from the battery to the main fuse, up to the ignition switch, back to the fuse panel and then down the the alternator. With plenty of connectors inbetween. The result was increased resistance and voltage drops which resulted, over time with corrosion and age added in, to reduced alternator output. I simply rewired the supply side to the alternator and ran some larger gauge wire directly from the battery to the alternator with a fuse and a relay triggered by the ignition switch. An instant change from 13.8 volts to 14.4 volts was the result. Your bike, though, doesn't have that kind of alternator, but Suzuki did some other weird things as I recall. I seem to remember having one of the three wires from the stator switched on and off by the headlight switch or something. Anyway, have a fresh look at the schematic you plan to use.

Yep, one of the stator legs runs up to the headlight switch... Who knows why they decided to do that but you can easily run the stator leads directly to the r/r and then from the r/r to the battery.

Yep, that sounds like what they did. As I recall, I fixed it way back when.

I'm going to stay away from the Caldecot... it appears to be the GS750-reaper.

What do you mean free?!?!!? Don't help turn me into a GS750e hoarder! Its bad enough I'm surfing the interwebs for parts I may not need! JK, seriously once I get into this one and I need parts that I can salvage off your 83 I will be reaching out to you! I'm just afraid, instead of using it for parts, I'm gonna end up dumping money into it to restore it.

My charging system died on the very same place as where I burned the valve too.

As to using parts off a '83 for the '77, sorry but they are two different bikes. My '83 is really "for free", just come get it. Its is a restoration job and there's no getting around that fact.

ElectricPrunes, yeah the ES was a looker. I loved the 16 inch front end, hated the anti-dive. Kinda miss those days.

Cheers!

Finally Pics!!!

Finally got it out of the owners garage, put an AGM battery in it and it fired up! Rides pretty well actually too. Everything needs work but I'm just glad it starts and rides! Super psyched!

Will need help with the carbs because I have to keep the choke on for it to stay running. Can anyone identify these carbs? He said they were Mikuni smooth bores but which exact ones are they so I can find a rebuild kit.

Bought moto lift!

Sooooo being excited about fixing this thing, I went ahead and ordered one of these. OTC moto lifts. Hopefully it works well!

I have one of those, works great for cradle frame bikes. You exhaust might be in the way though, ymmv.

Rusted out velocity stacks, old carb boots (carb to engine), aftermarket oil cooler... Yikes.

Unless you're a pro mech, work with Papi to get it reliable. :thumbup

Regardless, have fun and congrats!

it took you a year to get it out of owners garage.... damn you got some patience

Fortunately, I am a mech. Thanks!

I also broke my leg last Jan so 5 months can be blamed on that, but yes it did take a lot of convincing to finally move all his stuff!

Seems a case of extreme hoarding, shits no joke.

I wish I took pictures of the process. Front yard littered with tools, car parts, moto parts, and tons of ammo!

Sweet! I just kinda let the excitedness take me to amazon and punched in "motorcycle lift" found the "best" reviewed one and bought it. Which is very unusual because I usually spend days researching items I want to buy.

The exhaust is held together with springs so I'll disassemble it prior to loading on lift I guess.

or block it up with sections of 2x4
