Two books highly recommended for those interested in the Bible, explaining both the OT and the NT, respectively, in historical terms: "The Bible Unearthed" and "Forged: Writing in the Name of God."

A major consideration for anyone's religion is the fact that, historically and currently, the vast majority of humanity has and does believe in something different. How can this be if each religion is the "one, true" religion? And especially, how can so many different Christian religions base their differing belief systems on the same source book? (No answer needed, this is a rhetorical question, I know the answer.)

Lex

thanks for the book recomendations. I'll have to look for them.

in short, I stand by my faith, that "the one true religion" is bunk. because Religion is man made, and there for (biblicly) unfit to serve as the unifying anything.

Faith, is Godly, and therefore left to the discression of God, and not on our understanding. (Proverbds 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.)

this is why I take such a firm stance against mainstream religion. I enjoy church, because it is a forum. and any church that is unwilling to discuss, is not a house of God, but a house FOR God, that Man built.

Have you any more evidence to support that claim, than I have to support that he is not?
Yes, I do. The same source that made me believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny, that snow in the mountains is the work of an old man painting the tops white, that waves in the ocean are because of very big ships way over the horizon, that black folks are black because they drink too much coffee, and dozens of generations before that believed the Earth was flat and in the center of the universe, and dozens of generations before that believed stones, stars, the moon and what not were gods too. In a nutshell, the human brain is powerful imagination machine capable of creating and making us believe in everything.

so.... no?

What, you want middle names, social security numbers and best time to reach them?

I mean I just figured since you had matters of theological debate wrapped up tight as a drum you'd be willing to expound on your literal earth changing proof.

that OR, you can take your hostility (which is poorly being aimed at me instead of its intended target) and find some place else to post about it.

see, you actually aren't offending my by stating you don't believe in God. that's fine.

what you ARE doing, is proving to me and the rest of the world, that you are a jerk.

and judging by the first few posts and my previously afformentioned social standings, i'd say we are in good company then.

its thirsty thursday. come have a margarita with us.

You certainly have a fertile imagination.

I'm the kind of christian that loves all hates none. YMMV.

Rimmy, I admire your willingness and defiance to take on fires from all sides, but that's probably not going to end well. Loosen up and laugh a little. The world will not ever agree with you 100%.

InNoHurry, I am sure you don't feel it's your intent to be hostile, or to be caustic, or to troll, but it is looking like it to many of us.

We are all adults. We all have had our chances to say our piece. Sometimes, leaving an unproductive conversation is the best course of action. I understand though that's easier said than done for many of us, but having a nice day can be that easy.

Rimmy, your love of alcohol is getting in the way of knowing what day it is! Today is WEDNESDAY, all day!

Say, did you mispell your name above your avatar? Was is supposed to be "Rummy?" :staRang

(Just havin' some fun with ya, Rimmy! :teeth That margarita sounds good!)

If I may insert my :2cents here, and with apologies if I misstate InNoHurry’s position; plus I do respect Rimmy’s position.

It is generally impossible to prove a negative, as in, the nonexistence of a thing. How does one go about doing this?

It is much easier to prove the existence of a thing. This is generally done by way of scientific principles of discovery, documentation and confirmation.

It therefore is the responsibility of the person putting forth the belief in a thing to prove the existence of that thing, if proving the existence of a particular thing is of importance to that person.

The very best proof of the existence of a thing is for that thing, or the effect of the presence of that thing, to be observed by numerous reputable observers. There is great controversy world-wide as to there being a god; one of the most telling facts against there being a god is the lack of presence of a god. The god of the OT made numerous appearances to humans; what happened?

If the Bible is the only source for the existence of a god, then the Bible must be thoroughly proven to be sufficient for that proof. In fact, the first test of the Bible is that it must be proven inerrant if anything in it is to be believed. Lack of inerrancy removes the Bible from consideration of proof of a god, or “the” God. The Bible is easily proven to NOT be inerrant, and so fails as proof of a god.

For myself, I wish there would come a day when I’d look up and see that friendly white-bearded Caucasian face smiling at me. Really, I do.

On a related topic, there is no need of religion for humanity to act ethically and morally. None whatsoever. Though I do applaud the good works that religion does do. On the other hand, religion has also been and continues to be the cause of much suffering in the world.

Identifying yourself as a Christian is misleading if you are "against mainstream religion". Churches are not forums. If it was a forum there would not be the concept of heresy and blasphemy.

The faith and "can't understand the mysterious ways" thing is silly. First you need something specific to have faith in, which has to be built on something real. Even in the bible people don't rely on that; God literally talks to people and does magical things to prove himself.

It boils down to people believing that spiritual feelings are supernatural.

Do you believe earthquakes are caused by angry gods? If we had a dude walking around today doing magic, would you assume he's a god, or would you try to figure out his trick? Why don't you worship this dude:

No news on this guy for the past two years. Maybe he's dead?

have you seen riders wearing these patches?

Give your full opinion of them. Please share your experiences, stories, groans, gripes, criticisms or praises, i want to hear it all.
I ride from Monterey County to north of SF, and I haven't yet noticed any riders with those patches.

FWIW, I have no aversion to patched riders, and I'm happy when anyone offers help out on the road, needed or not. My first experience with patched riders was back in '90, when a trio of three-patch Harley riders pulled over on I-80 in Nevada to see if everything was alright (even though I was on a Japanese moto, and according to "common knowledge" should have been beneath contempt). We had a great time sipping tea & coffee and swapping stories until a Nevada state trooper shooed us off the shoulder.

In any case, I appreciate all riders who are interested in helping others; if I get evangelized along the way, that's just part of life's tapestry, and I'd take the experience for what it was. :)
