AB1371 - Another victory the spandex squad

I was going to make this huge rant but instead I will just say this;

:twofinger to every biker that feels the need to become a rolling roadblock. May you all get hemorrhoids on your spandex laden asses.

3ft bubble isn't too bad, Keith Code makes you pass slow riders with a 6ft bubble! Just make sure to pass them with adequate speed and noise.

Except the track is 40 feet wide and there's no double yellow running down the middle.

This law is irrelevant save for two situation. 1. you're driving like an asshat buzzing bicyclists with a cop right behind you or 2. you hit a bicyclist maintaining his lane position. Other than that, this law means nothing and is pretty unenforceable.

Couple of things, because I pay for one vehicle, doesn't give me carte blanche access to the roads. Just saying that logic doesn't make sense.

Second thing, rogue cyclists are the minority as I feel are rogue motorcyclists. Problem is, cyclist/motorcyclist that are courteous, are invisible since that is what courteous means, staying the fuck outta the way. So you see the shit heads more often than you'd notice those that aren't.

Having said that, I try to go out of my way to wave and acknowledge those peds/cars/cyclists that are good at sharing the road. Maybe at some point we can all get along.

This is for your safety. It doesn't mean you have to stay 3 feet away from me, it means I have to stay 3 feet away from YOU. #restrainingorder #valgarsbadtouch

:laughing

#valgarsbadtouch

Wait... . Your sweaty crotch is all over my bike seat... .

:cry

Sadly, this has been coming for years. But I'm reasonably sure it is because of cars, not MCs.

Here's the kicker. My guess is it will be rarely enforced and only really used in the case of someone being a complete asshat.

What I DO wish is that there would be more "nailing the cyclists". It's not like we (meaning EVERYONE including law enforcement) don't know where they are and what they are doing with their bullshit 3-5 wide in a lane going uphill, running all stop lights and signs and being a major cause of douchebaggery and annoyance pretty much any time they are encountered :mad

But whatcha gonna do? If I were king of the world.... :laughing

Your condescending attitude towards cyclists shows your bias and doesn't help your "argument" either.

Condescending or not, this is a stupid law that will be abused by the already entitled road mongers of California. Daily, no exaggeration, I see people on bicycles blow through stop signs and red lights. The arguments about maintaining momentum don't matter if you're going to demand we share the road and give you all the same rights and responsibilities as motorized transports. This is going to be abused all day and the same dicks who punched my car for trying to drive on a road during their drink and ride Bike Party are going to be chuckling all day about forcing traffic behind them to go 10mph.

Bias accepted.

Again thats a minority of cyclist. I cycle, my brothers cycle, and our friends cycle. But I also ride. I've had cars plopping their two right tires into the bicycle lane forcing me to ride on the gutter of the sidewalk. So I'm kinda glad for this, because I hope those same dickbags get a fat ticket for almost trying to kill me.
Which brings me to another point. There so many people on here who go on and on about how cyclists are self-entitled blahblah, take a peek in the mirror guys. We t-bag on almost everyone except our own. I take that back, we even t-bag our own.
The point is, we both ride on two wheels, both at risk of being killed by cagers, or any motor vehicle. Both parties have idiots and morons who do dumb shit. :thumbdown

I'll even admit I blow through stop signs while I'm cycling too. But you know what, unless you come to a complete stop at a stop sign, you have no right to bitch about it. A rolling stop is not a stop.

You know, if you just replaced bicycle with motorcycle, the op would b right at home on a Prius forum and we'd all be appalled at the vitriol and complete douchbaggery of the attitude.

Sorry Sparky, I was with ya all the way until you said that. Blowing a stop sign, at speed without even slowing the same as slowing down so you can stop should you have to?

I ride my bicycle every day and I stop at stop signs. I make it fun by doing a stoppie or balancing, momentum really is just BS. I was going up a hill the other day that peaks and the downhill side has stop signs due to cross streets. I passed a woman cycling up hill and when I stopped at the sign on the downhill side, she blew right through it. Without really thinking, I blurted out, "Fuck you, you're supposed to stop". I noticed she stopped at the next stop sign. Peer pressure at it's best. :thumbup

This law won't change anything for most people that give lots of room to cyclists. This law is for the inconsiderate people who don't. Enforceable or not, if it does anything to raise awareness in the general public, fantastic.

I don't get it. As motorcyclists we're always clamoring for recognition of our vulnerable status out there. Cyclists are even more vulnerable. Yes, a few cyclists are inconsiderate of their impact on others on the road. I would argue I know more motorcyclists that fit that description. Doesn't mean I want any less safety awareness from cagers for either group.

I ride in the city a fair amount on a bicycle. I stop at stop signs and stop lights. I stay to the right. I obey the traffic laws. Probably every ride longer than twenty minutes I have to take evasive action to avoid getting hit by a car. I also see motorcyclists riding in the bicycle only path. Like has been said, a small minority of cyclists given many a bad name.

I stop at red lights, and most stop signs. If I'm not stopping completely, I slow way the fuck down and look to make sure there are no vehicles approaching the stop area. If there are, I will stop to make sure they aren't going to plow through and clean my clock. When I'm downtown or in a traffic laden area, I will come to a full stop at every sign. Oddly, this confuses drivers more than anything, and I usually have to wave them through the intersection.

Yes I am violating the law, as are most of the people in cars that do the exact same thing at stop signs.

What kills me, are the cyclists that do not even LOOK and just blast out into the intersection without slowing, looking, or anything other than playing with their iPod (yeah, those two earbuds you have on? not a great idea in city traffic).

Most stop signs? How about if cars, trucks and buses stopped at most stop, even though they slowed down? Would that he acceptable?

Most do that now, I've come to accept it. If I see ANY cars or pedestrians I come to a full stop. If the area is empty I still slow down and prepare to stop, if there are no vehicles I start pedaling again and continue on.

Feel free to hate on me if you want. I'm not the guy blowing full speed through a stop.

Give them an opportunity to move into a zone that is safe for them and for you.

If they fail to do that, maybe they don;t know you are there, briefly tap the horn.

If they fail to follow basic road etiquette, then lay on the horn until they pull over. Pretty sure they'll get out of the way eventually, because they cannot outrun the horn, and none of them wear earplugs.

Dickhead behavior results in dickhead laws. Reap what you sow.

This! I've seen my fair share of dickheads buzzing bicyclists or crowding them on the downhill. Hey, they need more room on the downhill for apexing on those skinny tires, no need to crowd them! Seriously, how much room to you think there is on the Bolinas/Fairfax cut off? Give'm a break, you'll still get your twisty time in.

That said, plenty of bicyclists in their "peleton" with absolutely no concern for traffic behind them. Save the peleton for the race there Lance. You don't need to go 5 wide on the uphill climb.

Simply stated, some mutual respect goes a long way. Give a little . . . get a little.

can't legislate morality. Or common sense. Or conversely, legislate out of existence asshattery, douchebaggery or dickheadedness.

S we should carry a three foot stick and if you swing it and whack a lance armstrong wannabe whose weaving back and forth across lanes at a speed his/her brakes cannot be effective at, then you know it's not safe to pass?

im totally ok w/ this legislation except for my feelings that we dont need more laws. like others have said, its just asshole behavior by some ruining it for everyone. i got honked at 3x on Sunday during my ride and each and every time my tires were about 1ft within the bike lane. seriously a :wtf moment since the full car lane was open and i had my bike lane. when i was on roads without a bike lane, drivers were actually more courteous. whenever people get behind the wheel, something weird happens to their minds :dunno

this.

anyone trying to kill me should be punished. and i dont care one bit if u think i deserved it, i probably didnt and its not your privilege to decide.
