Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

Very nice ride report John!
You made it to some cool places.
I like your pic's and again... sorry you had to experience dual flats. Before even making it to "The Weave". Hope you don't have to use those patches I gave ya too soon.

Also... let me get you one of the 22mm axle nut/tire spoons. (I can get them at a pretty good price)
I'll try to make one of the Wednesday baja meets to get it to you.
I'd have given you mine if I was done riding for the weekend but wasn't sure if it would be needed or not.

Anyway, hope to make another ride with ya one day!

I'm sure I'll make every effort to ride with you again, soon,
even if it's only at Weaverville next year ... :thumbup

... your TW would be an awesome BARF Baja bike ... we're
having a BARF Baja meet-up tonight at 6:30 pm
at Lanesplitters in Berkeley near University, and we'll have one
next month ... a 22mm spoon/wrench would be sweet,
and I'd be happy to reimburse you for it ... :cool

see you soon, :party

Great pics and narration John. That looks like some fun riding.

StonyBARF! :party

At the BARF Baja meet-up last night
Lance asked for a map of the route
I took this year to Weaverville, more-or-less ...
Bully Choop is difficult on google maps
because I think they put gaps so they
don't appear to be through-routes on
family sedan GPSs ... :laughing

... the route also does not include
our stay at oobus's olive orchard ... :cool

Anyway, here's a link you can zoom in and out with ...

... and here's a screen-shot of what
I came up with for a map ... it's
basically over 400 miles of (easy, KLR) dirt fire-roads ... :ride

mendogt2017.jpg

... if you zoom in on the map you
can see there are forest service
roads across Hwy 36 from Deer Lick
that will lead you south around Ruth Lake
to Mina Road, which is what I did ...
the map also does not include Horse Ridge
east of Ruth Lake, which is the way oobus
and I went on Friday ...

... for a more truly Mendo Grand Tour,
I'd take M6 to M3 from Lake Pillsbury,
but it was so hot I just took M1 up and back ... :blah

see you around
the campfire,

For this route, what is the longest stretch of miles between gas stops that you needed? And how much extra fuel did you need to carry on you?

I'd guess 150 mile range would be good, and one may be able to get away with 100 miles ... for example it's about 90 miles up M1 from Upper Lake to Covelo, with chances for gas at two places at Lake Pillsbury (Soda Creek Store & Pillsbury Resort Marina), and about 150 miles from Covelo up Mina Rd to Weaverville with gas at Kettenpom, Ruth and Platina ... on the east side there's gas at Weaverville, Platina, Red Bluff and sometimes Elk Creek and Stonyford ...

... my KLR has a seven gallon aftermarket tank for a range of over 300
miles at 50 mpg ... (which is necessary for some Death Valley loops) ...
so I think I could get from Upper Lake to Weaverville without carrying
extra gas (which I never do) ...

.... guess Platina, Tomshead Mtn, M22, M4, FH7, M3, M10 to Upper Lake
would be about 150 miles ... a AAA map helps make sense of
the google maps and Mendo NF maps by identifying the main through-routes ...

... guess the Dacati Scrambler has a 3.5 gal tank and 125 mile range?
... maybe I'd carry a couple extra liters ... :dunno

... hope that helps ... :party

... we were also talking about places to camp
at the BARF Baja meet-up around Bridgeport
and I was having a
senior moment and blanking on the name of
Buckeye Hot Springs ... I park/camp on the
south side under the trees on the flat ground ...
(there's also a not-flat, treeless parking area
on the north side) ...
it's maybe a 5 min walk down to the creek ...
lots of little herd-paths ...

Here's a south side Buckeye Road hot springs dispersed camping pin ...

Here's a pin for Travertine Hot Springs ...

... I've camped up on Masonic Mountain near
Bridgeport ... it's pretty easy to get to ...
(you may have to switch to satellite view to see
the fire road/radio tower road ...)

... and here's a pin for the
East Walker River hot spring,
which is just a small stone pool ...
It is hard loaded-for-camping KLR riding to get down to
(steep, loose, rutted, rocky, sandy ...)
I usually go here during the week
to try to get it to myself ...

see you around
the campfire,

You should write a book John. You know every place. :laughing

I seem to remember Little Walker river campground to be nice, with lots of Aspens to camp amongst. Fishing was off tho. :mad

I may have the name wrong. The turnoff is a few corners south of the 108/395 junction.

... I think that's just a nice way of saying I'm old ... :laughing:thumbup

... pretty sure I've explored up that turn-off from 395 south of
Hwy 108, but I never explored down to the river ... will have to
check it out soon ... :party

I'm thinking about doing this in a few weeks and will
be riding by the Little Walker River campground area:

... here's the ADV BAARC post regarding trying
to climb White Mtn on 9/3/17:
http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/bay-area-adventure-riders-club.530333/page-297#post-32931298

... I used to fly fish a lot and have a
nice seven-piece two-weight flyrod,
but in the nearly 30 years living in
CA I've been too cheap to buy a fishing license ... :rolleyes

That's quite a hike. Probably a fun ride to get there as well.

Fly gear doesn't take too much space. Every trip I do, gets the water/fishing opportunity review. :laughing
California fishing license is rather brutal $$, if one is only fishing a couple times a year. I bought a lifetime license years ago, when it wasn't too expensive. Seems to have worked out ok.

John - Thanks for the follow up on the Bridgeport camping recommendations :thumbup. Buckeye Hot Springs looks to be our choice for next weekend.

A few from saturday overnight at Fremont Peak -

Ready to roll

Santa Anita road. A Dual sport is nice for crappy roads like this.2 Santa Anita.jpg

Browns Valley road

I stopped and explored this part of Clear Creek. Mainly wanted to see how much access there was. I went about 3 miles in, to the junction where my finger points. Wanted to go further, but it was very hot, was by myself, the roads were silty, and I had too much gear on my bike. There's lots more to explore. Perhaps a group ride camp out is in the future here. Spring maybe.

Camp sites are clean & basic.

A couple shots of the road. It was always going up or down. Never flat.

New friends at camp. Jill & Reggie. Reggie did not like the flies, thus the tent preference.

Great pics, sorry I missed it! :thumbup:party

... not familiar with the roads
on your map ... I must stay
on the green roads ... :laughing

... spring would be fun
for the longer days,
but think I've been
through Clear Creek
in mild winters, too ... :ride
