Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

god bless Kawasaki ... :angel
I like it.
Is this a new model John, or someone’s wishful thinking?

Getting geared up for a day on the big bike! Planning to ride north up through Calistoga and hwy 29 up to Lake County. Then hit Walker Ridge Rd to Bartlett Sprgs heading west to Nice. Then over the hill to Hopland on a dirt rd and then slab home. Should be a great day!

Sweet easy dirt on Walker Ridge today.

Big Bike Friendly..

These big bikes are cool.

Views for days...

Lots of burned areas.

Over looking Clrear Lake from Bartlett Springs Road,

I like it.

Hey EricB! :wave

reading the pic is just photoshop wishful-thinking ... check out the two different frames ...

but, I’m also wishing and thinking that if any company can raid the parts bin for a worthy KLR replacement PDQ it’s my favorite motorcycle company ... :thumbup:laughing

Nice pics Cabrito! Here's one of you at the top of the hill.

instead of dumping in the recent Yamaha T-700 thread:

Kawasaki 2020 VERSYS®-X 300:
MSRP: $5500 (non-ABS)
Weight: 386 lbs
Fuel: 4.2 gallons
Range: ~240 miles
wheels: 19" front, 17" rear

so, if I'm honest with myself, this bike would probably be the best
replacement for my pre-gen KLR with the type of riding I'm doing these days
(easy fire roads) ...

anyway, multi-cylinder, sub 400lbs, mid-four-figure ADV-ish bike ... +Kawasaki ftw! :party

John, I think the CB500X would be a much better prospect. Are you looking for small? Otherwise I’d say take the NC for a week.

2019 Honda CB500X:

Weight: 430 lbs
Fuel: 4.6
Range: ~280 miles
wheels: cast 19" front/17" rear

Hoping to go to Stony Barf. I still think you should take the NC for camp out. You may be impressed.

Try the NC, John :) Take me when you do! And you know you're always welcome to try out the CBX. :ride

speak of the devil! :wave
suspect we’ll definitely get a chance to dual-sport this year ... :thumbup

There you go John, done deal. NC has the TKC 80s

well, done deal! my chance to learn the diff between the NC and the CB-X. :cool
Thanks, ThumperX, hope to see you and Mr ThumperX, soon! :gsxrgrl

Cerro Gordo, 06/14/2020 ... guess the museum burned, looks like the hotel, church and some other buildings were saved. Not clear yet, maybe just the caretaker's home was saved, and the hotel burned too ...?

Damn, another DV location I hadn't visited yet that burns down.. What a shame.

Saint John Mountain ...

stjohnmtn.map_.jpg

Peakbagger.com large map link, to zoom in and out.

So, I've been looking at the radio towers on Saint John Mountain for 20 years, wondering if I could ride my KLR up to the top ...?

You get a nice view of it from I-5, and all over, because it's sort of on its own.

Map pic isn't too good, but Mt. St. John is the red circle, North Fork campground, the fork for the guys who took Black Diamond up to Low Gap, Fouts Springs is at the bottom and to the right edge is the town of Stonyford and East Park Reservoir ...

The yellow circle is the former site of a watch tower on Black Diamond Ridge that I've used to watch the sunrise when camping at the rodeo grounds at Stonyford. You pass by it using Black Diamond to make your way up to M3, a right fork just after the intersection of the road that leads from the North Fork campground ...

a view of St. John Mountain from Sheetiron Mountain, in last year's pic ...

anyway, also always wanted to do a StonyBARF, and since Cedarville was cancelled, this would be my chance. :ride

Because the weather looked awesome (not triple-digit heat, like sometimes) I took Thursday off from work and rode up via Pleasant Valley and Lake Sonoma ... here's an easter egg pic for GB500guy, who taught me about this spot to stop for a view of Lake Sonoma ... :angel

soon enough I had my campsite set up in the Grey Pine group campground at Fouts Springs ...

M0t0_Ryder assured me that it was eminently KLR-able, and told me a story about trying to ride up there in StonyBARFs gone by, in the snow, with Lunch Box, so, since it was about sunset on Thursday, I headed out to see how high I could get ...

where the KLR decided, enough! about 500 yards from the radio towers.

6700', mission accomplished! :ride

sutterbuttes.jpg

view of East Park Reservoir and the Sutter Buttes to the east ...

the next couple of mornings I got up early (5am, and 4:30am) and rode back up to see the sunrise ...

pretty fun KLR/ADV bike place to go, will have to see about maybe camping up there someday, good views to the east and west for the sunrise/sunset ...

kind of fun thing is the road up sort of hugs to the eastern boundary of the Snow Mountain Wilderness.

OK, next BARF Adventure Riding plan is Ho Ho Weaverville, 07/24-26/2020 ... see you around the campfire! :toothless:party

Thank you, this is great! Adding to my list to try later this summer.

Asclepias Speciosa! :love A lovely California native, also known as Showy Milkweed. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs exclusively on milkweeds :)

Beautiful ride and photos, John! Thanks for sharing!

I've looked at that road up to the top of saint John a number of times on the drive to Fouts and always wanted to take it. Looks a little scary but an adventure. Thanks for the exploratory work! Great pics and it was so pretty up there in that late evening light with the cloud cover. Alpen glow raking all over the ridges!
