Aircraft that make your jaw drop!

Yes to the question...19th Ave. was a constant path for us and many a glimpse of the jet. Isn't there some form of homage to the original at the park?

A couple of crappy cell phone pics from my last visit to Udvar-Hazy in 2013

F-4S Phantom II. This airframe was a MiG killer in Vietnam.

Yeah, the patina on that paint is awesome!
If you click on the magnifying glass in this link you can zoom in on different pars on that P38.

...speaking of Enola Gay, work travels brought me to Tinian, CNMI several years ago. Tinian was a significant B-29 base during WWII--Enola Gay and Bock's Car launched from there to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fat Man and Little Boy were stored in these pits, which have been preserved.

Work also sends me to Guam fairly often. This B-52 tail section sits in the jungle adjacent to the runway at Andersen AFB, Guam. My recollection is that this was a derelict airframe used for crash/rescue training and was blown off the tarmac by a typhoon sometime in the '70s.

Very awesome. I worked with an old duffer that was an aircraft mechanic on Tinnian. He told me they moved all non essential personnel to the other side of the island when they received, loaded and launched the A bombs

Here's a C-130J off-loading disaster relief supplies on the island of Rota, CNMI following Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018. And that's me ruining the shot LOL

Did you help unload or just "supervise"? :laughing
The Air Force bubbas kept me out of their way LOL I helped the locals inventory everything, load onto their trucks, and unload at their fire station where everything was being staged for distribution to survivors.

@GAJ I see you are a gentleman of class and culture who spells his name the right way! (I, too, am a Geoff)

I somehow stumbled upon a movie about this aircraft. It's an O-1 Cessna Bird Dog.

This was flown out of South Vietnam, during the withdrawal, by a Vietnamese pilot, loaded up with his family and landing on the CV Midway.

If you've ever seen video of crews pushing helicopters off of an aircraft carrier into the sea, this is why they were being pushed off. To allow this pilot and his family to land.

It's on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola.
