AMA/DMG/Manufacturers 'Sploding

Mladin did have a shot at GP Racing back in the 90's. Didn't go so well, if I remember.

And at least for now (and with the DMG plan as I understand it) he can make a lot more right now dominating AMA Superbike. We've all seen the promo spots from NASCAR drivers even on mainstream TV. If that bleeds into the revised series there may even be more money for the top guys...

-jim

yes, Mladin did do a stint with Cagiva in the 500's back in '93. perhaps that shot should have gone better, but what i was refering to was his attitude after winning an number of AMA Superbike championships and not getting any offers from Suzuki to move up, instead they pick the young gun of the time, Hopper. the point is, Matt didn't waste a lot of time belaboring the issue, he simply decided to make the most of how the ball bounced, and he has.

there might be more money for the top riders after DMG, but there will certainly be more focus and marketing of them as "celebrities" more than racers.

But it all sounds VERY privateer unfriendly...

they told a couple privateer teams, @ barber, that if they wanted to come back next year to get a semi or a toter-home, instead of a truck pulling a 16 foot trailor. what a bunch of bullshit!

Where'd you hear that?

what? women and minorities can't be rednecks? :laughing

you make a good point about figuring out what your target demographic is, and Nascar is also moving up the average household income foodchain, but hell, look at the average motorsport fan worldwide and it's really not all that different. the 90,000 fans at a Valencia MotoGP race ain't actually composed solely of lawyers, stockbrokers, and physicians. the Monaco GP in F1 might be the only real exception... :laughing

Me thinks the NASCAR demographic is supported by very low Iq people, as we all know they are not confined to any geographic/race/gender--just plain stoopid--but they buy ALOT of Tide, Viagra and the like

Kind of sad as in Europe, the popularity of sports is
1) Soccer
2) F1
3) MotoGP

So all this attention in the US on Nascar makes us look like dimwits to the rest of the world

from the guy that runs the team. rodney, can't remember his last name, used to work for marty cragill when he rode for mladin racing. he was, rightfully, pretty upset by the demand.

in Europe people like to be active and in shape.
here if you can't hold hamburger in one hand, beer in other and play sport in same time it ain't sport :laughing

amazing soccer isn't more popular here since you'd be able to hold a beer in one hand and a burger in the other and still be able to kick the ball around.

even tough I am from europe I never liked soccer,it is boring.
basketball is only none fuel sport I liked.

I couldn't help but chuckle at the possible class structure. :teeth

...a specialty racing series--the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup was given as an example (although no agreement is in place for 2009) but the proposed 450cc Super Singles class or a Kawasaki Ninja 250 spec race were also mentioned as possibilities.

-jim

Daytona Superbike will be the premier class and will race twice on a typical three-day weekend, once on Saturday and once on Sunday. It will have a rule structure designed to “promote parity and competition” among Twins, Triples and four-cylinder machines, allowing participation from the maximum number of brands from around the world. DMG’s presentation states that 10 manufacturers (Aprilia, BMW, Buell, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha) currently offer a motorcycle eligible for the class.

Ahh, are they thinking of the Aprilia SVX 550?:dunno And what KTM??:wtf

Time for the AFM to step in and go national? Run-what-ya-brung sounds good as a national series :laughing

Kinda like in the 70s when KR threatened to form his own racing organization. In this case, the factories may back that sort of play. Maybe it would become another IRL/CART battle--hopefully with different outcome. I could see Danica in Moto ST tho.:laughing

Is AMA Supercross unique to the US? I know the rest of the world races MX and Enduro, but what about the SX. I bring this up because, if it is unique to the US, it is an example of the AMA creating a unique race format that seems fairly successful and commercialized. It has the Nascar/WWE type crowd and following. What about Monster Trucks? I would really prefer that the US have some kind of pureist motorcycle racing format, but it seems like we take ALL forms of motorsport (actually all sports) and put our own twist on it so that more people can make money from it. I guess it is the down side of living in a capitalist society. While I would love to see commercials for Road Racing as often as WWE Smackdown between episodes of Law and Order, I would rather not have predetermined out comes. A little drama in the pits never hurt anybody. I am sure it is there, they just don't capture it on TV. As long as we can still watch WSBK and Moto GP for a more pure take on international motorcycle racing, DMG is welcome to screw up the domestic superbike series.

My suggestion:
-They should make wheelies mandatory on the straights, especially on the final lap. If you cross the finish line for the checkered flag with anything less than a 10 o'clock attitude, then you have to do a mandatory backflip off the tank. If you do neither, there is a hefty fine. Oh and the WINNER must do 360 burnouts on the front straight and any infield that might exist.
-All communications must be broadcast on live TV and locally at the track on AM/FM radio frequencies.
-There must be 200% more RV parking within view of all of the racetracks so we can all watch the races from the tops of our cages.
-All race teams must mass produce flags with their logos and sponsors so we can hang the on the vehicles that we watch the races from.
-Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, half of Saturday, and half of Sunday shall be dedicated to pre-race shows. Monday will be dedicated to the Post race shows. Speed 2 will have 24 hour coverage.

Superbike IS the format created in the US and, it IS highly successful, commercialised and popular worldwide and in Europe(Supercross too).
The problem in US Superbike has been poor management and too many redundant classes, dumbing down the whole series with FX Daytona 200s, promoted as equal or above Superbike in prestige/reward, and everybody getting to be a winner and take home their own little championship.
If Superbike was properly presented, showcased and rewarded as the only class that REALLY matters, everyone would want to be in it and give it their best effort.
Right now, it sounds like DMG thinks that to have a Hyosung 650 on Shinko rubber be competitive(with all other shit) in Americas premiere roadracing series is the way to go. BS!

Dude so my 2 600's are garbage next year IF I wanted to ride em again and I have to start all over? WTF DMG is soo off the mark I think...

The more I think about it, the more I'm glad about DMG coming in. Bull in a china shop for sure, but...

AMA road racing is stagnant. The coverage on speed this weekend was as boring and erratic as ever. Freddie is the most boring color man in announcing history. But aside from that, it seems like the play-by-play guy and he are directed to spend a ton of their time explaining the differences between classes, and why certain riders are in certain races, completely failing to highlight some of the most exciting moments and ongoing drama of every race.

AMA is so boring I wouldn't bother to watch any of it if I didn't live in the US. The route to more teams fielding competitive packages comes through money, which comes from more viewers. If holy principles of racing are violated in the process of trying to shoot some life into the veins of the events, I don't see the problem.
