American Rider Missing in Mexico

I suspect he is not an idiot, just brave and open minded.

That is going to piss off those that are not as brave, and not as open minded.

Just like being tall pisses off short dudes. Present company accepted of course.

Hope he turns up.

Hoping for the best for our Fellow Rider! Good on ya for setting out on an adventure, come home safe.

Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. More balls than brains in my opinion. I would almost say his plan was reckless with a total disregard for personal safety. Sucks to say but sounds like he may have dug his own grave. If he does show up though I'm thinking it this might be a publicity stunt to drum up interest in his adventure stuff.

It's not the fact that he's riding to Mexico, it's that he's riding with no experience. I've seen tons of videos of people crashing their motorcycles LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP because well, "How hard can riding a motorcycle (with no training or experience) be?"

Balls are great...until they're eaten off your corpse by a straw Mexican dog.

:thumbup

From the sound of most of these posts, we should all stay indoors and practice our motorcycle skills on some sort of video game. It too dangerous out in the real world! I'd ride solo through the same region. Obviously take some precautions, but would still ride there.

Not everyone who seeks out adventure is a hero or brave or smart. As it is with broader society, there are people with questionable judgment among them as well. Funny how the Internet has turned everyone who travels to remote places a hero.

YEAH! THAT"S IT!!!!

WE THINK HE'S A FUCKING HEROOOOO.

Good lord. :rolleyes

Part of the new economy in Mexico involves kidnapping. I have ties to a family in central Mexico. The father is a retired cop and was approached by some of his buddies from the force asking if he wanted to get in on their extracurricular activities, kidnapping.
At that point it was kidnapping locals. He told them to go to hell, to which he was told to watch his back.
His niece was later kidnapped and it didn't end well despite the family paying what they could, she is alive. The kidnappers were local people the family knew. Just one story, but not an uncommon one.
Yeah fuck going to Mexico.

I rode around on a motorscooter in Pakistan. Along with Millions of other Pakistanis.

Im just a person.

This gentlemen is not brave, or courageous, nor a god damn hero for fucks sake. He is quite simply a naïve and reckless fool. Enthusiasm got in the way of good judgment.

He obviously has little respect for the people that care about and love him.

...and this is coming from a woman who rode alone throughout Baja and mainland Mexico.

I hope to god that he is found and is in good health, and even better, if this was all a publicity stunt.

Do u have any idea how many Americans, let alone foreigners, visit mexico annually? Know how many of those are victims of violient crimes? I'll give a you hint, its a fraction of the percentage you will see any large American city. Thats the facts. Everything else is sheer fear mongering. I have travelled all over Mexico, will continue to do so, and continue to suggest others do as well. Have americans been kidnapped or murdered? Yes. Vast majority have some sort of connection to something else. Are there issues in Mexico, hell yes.

Christ, remember a few decades ago when tourists were being targeted leaving Miami Intl airport in rental cars? Merika.... its dangerous place to visit. I had a conversation with a couple of young guys from Tennesee pre running Baja a few years back. They asked me if I was uncomfortable travelling in MX solo without a gun. My reply was I would be more uncomfortable travelling in the hills of TN without a gun than here. The point wasnt lost on them.

Even if you remove the possibility that there was any foul play here, Mexico is a challenging place to ride. The most challenging place, riding skill wise, I've ever ridden... and this guy had zero riding experience, let alone any formal training.

I have no issue with his choice of destinations/routes. I've done similar trips in the past with very few issues. That said, I question why someone with no moto experience would attempt such a feat. If he does end up dead, there's a good chance that it was self inflicted. The riding down there can be pretty treacherous all on its own. Couple that with the military/police corruption and other issues and it makes for a pretty dangerous trip.

I'm going to Pakistan this year (thanks, Moin!!!), and I honestly feel that it is a safer trip than modern day central Mexico.

Damn, I hope he's alright.

Mexico pretty much destroyed my KLR, here's hoping he's on a beach somewhere drinking Corona with a busted frame on his KLR.

And +16 on the SPOT. Brave is one thing, going in there without a plan is just plain stupid. I remember another ADV rider doing something similar. Brand newbie, bought a bike, rode into Mexico, rode in Mexico at night, hit a donkey, spent weeks in a shitty Mexican hospital paralyzed. Depressed, he ended up killing himself not long after he got back to the US.

Exactly.
