Pavement is not the same as silt in the middle of nowhere.
Lack of riding experience didn't seem to be the issue. He made it from New York to Mexico and no rider or bike problems were reported. His last message and the article makes the point that the geo-political landscape was the problem.
Again, his skills are less in question than his knowledge of the hot spot he rode in to.
- How much did he learn or know before he got there?
- What precautions did he take?
- Did he have to take that route?
- Was he being hunted?

I couldn't find the thread on ADV, I checked the last four pages of trip reports, and nothing turned up.
Does anyone have a link to it?

Unless we've read his posts on advrider we don't know if he was riding down a dry riverbed in Mexico.
Mexico has a network of paved roads just as we do in the US, it's likely that he never got off pavement before he stopped communicating.
Once he reaches Central America, that might not be the case, but that still doesn't put his inexperience to the top of the list of problems he'd face.

Just correcting someone who claimed he had no formal training.
Boy, did I ever pick the wrong side of this one!

I'm going to go way out on limb here and guess that you've never ridden in Mexico.
He's not posting on ADVrider :|

They seem to have been pouring money into them since I was last there a couple years ago. He's not posting on ADVrider :|

Anyway, this is all a non-issue. According to the report I linked to above, people have known where he was since last week.
Umm, according to the thread you guys provided links for, he was picked up unconscious last Thursday and is now in a Mexican hospital.
I take it back. More riding experience before embarking on a journey like that would probably have helped.

Thanks SO much for posting that. What a huge relief.
I want to buy that guy a beer and hear the story first hand (assuming that it's our guy). I sure hope it is, and I hope that he comes through this OK.
In before the edit!
