If Ikkaku was as strong as he is, it means he had bankai when he and Ichigo first fought. How come he didn't just whoop the shit out of him then? And that was the first battle Ichigo had when he went into Soul Society. He had a tougher time with Renji afterwards than he did with Ikkaku.

that also confused me, but i have an explanation that doesnt explain everything. well, anyways, remember how he said he didnt want anyone else to know he had a bankai except for renji and that pretty boy guy? If he unleashed his bankai in soul society, everyone would know his true potential. BUT, that doesnt explain why he got his ass whooped by ichigo with his first transformation :confused

this is the math for the people who are too lazy to read.

Ichigo > Ikkaku
Ikkaku > Renji
Ichigo greater or equal to Renji

???

It's true but that's the thing with fighting based anime like this (Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, Dragonball). I'm entertained as much as the next person but they're driven by action while using the same recycled plots. So don't think about it logically.

There will always be inconsistencies. The storylines are based on the main characters (in this case Ichigo) becoming the strongest out of them all. But what could possibly happen next after the protagonist has become the pinnacle of skill and power...
someone stronger comes from somewhere unknown and oh yeah...these other characters were actually even stronger all along or became unexpectedly stronger after some "extreme" training. This means you have to watch the next storyline. Which I do to see how ridiculously powerful the creators can make their characters.

For plot or thinking, watch things like Death Note, Monster, Kino no tabi or Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (the last one may be a little too much drama but I watch everything). Don't think about plot with fighting based anime. Just let it take you for an entertaining ride.

Kind of interesting.. Do you guys have any another recommendations... everything I find is very "japanese school girl" and I'm really into more action/fighting stuff then girls with big boobs stuff...

If you've never seen Samurai Champloo, give it a look. It's based around the end of the Meji era, samurai wandering around looking for purpose, crime & evil taking oveer and all that... and some good guys putting the hurt on them.

Main characters are a super-skilled swordsmen, one an honorable samurai type, the other an undisciplined criminal, both "helping" a cute woman look for someone.

Plenty of action, plenty of odd-ball silliness.

Yeah Samurai Champloo is what brought me into Anime (i'm pretty new to it all) and is still my all time favorite.. the music, the style, the characters... I think it will always be in my top series of all time...

I'll suggest a few but they're popular so you may have seen them.

Cowboy Bebop - It's not samurai and hip hop but it still has action and style. Plus, it was directed by the same person who directed Samurai Champloo.

Samurai Deeper Kyo - As the title indicates, more samurai goodness. Once you get through the silliness of the first few episodes the story takes a drastic turn.

Rurouni Kenshin - A little old school but still one of the greatest samurai animes of all time. Just make sure you watch the OVA set (which is arguably some of the best anime period). Watch the TV series before the OVA and only up until the end of the Shishio/Kyoto storyarc. After that it's a waste of time.

Are you interested in anything other than samurai stuff?

Hajime no Ippo?

If so, it's very good. It becomes a little repetitive at the end but it's worth watching. It actually motivated me a little with my workouts believe it or not.

This is a little different from the ones you have mentioned but you may also like Hikaru no go. Don't be fooled because it is centered around a board game. If you appreciate the development of characters and seeing them evolve their skills to crush their opponents then watch it, it's really good. I had no interest in Go and didn't know anything about it before watching this, but they did a really good job of making it interesting.

I had a copy of the LA DN but it really sucked quality wise...
