requirements:
-new, like off the lot
-reliable, like "who cares how long the warranty is, you won't need it"
-high bang/buck ratio
-good MPG = high 20s at least.
-4 doors
-might be buying 2 of them
-under $40k total for both (stop laughing)

more words: looking to replace 2 aging, fun and unreliable current cars, with economical commuters that mainly need gas and oil. bells and whistles are definitely secondary. i know none will really be fun to drive but it'd be nice if they can merge with freeway traffic better than my 1974 ford courier.

as a hint of where the current ideas are: kia is soul and Rio look interesting

New Ford Fusion? Looks fucking good and the I4s are balls deep on fuel economy.

New Honda Fit. Get's highest reviews in sub-compact cars. I average about 33-36mpg combined. It's the most spacious and has an amazing "Magic Seat" feature which enables you to fold down the seats and create a flat surface in the back. I was able to fit a dining table with all chairs.. simply amazing.

It's fun to drive, handles well, and maintenance is simple oil changes between 5k-10k depending on how you drive (has maintenance minder system). It can be had for about $18k OTD.

no idea on reliability, but the new Dodge Dart actually isn't horrible looking.

Ford Fiesta?

I'll be looking at the Fiats this weekend.......
but only 2 door.....
reliability still an unknown factor.....

let us know what you end up with please.

honda fit

or check out the new 2013 civic

the 2011/12 it got panned so bad they had to redesign it. wow it is even more ugly than ever.

Consumer Reports says Honda Fit or Mazda 3.

Honda Fit.

Very versatile (rear seats can fold into the floorboard), get's great mileage, not too big exterior wise, but roomy inside. Pretty peppy motor too.

The MIL just bought one for herself and it's a nice ride.

Honda Fit for mileage, Ford Focus for sheer fun factor and aftermarket go fast stuff.

Ford Focus.....you get a lot for the money.... no need to step up to the Fusion IMHO.

Or a Mazda 3, they have an engine that gets in the high 30's for mpg.

Forget about Honduhs (slow, ugly, hella road noise, horrible dashboards).

id stay with the hot hatch with a 4 banger for the fun, and the better mileage..cant go wrong with a mazada 3 hatch

Dude, srsly, Nissan cube. I've had one for a year and I love it! Get it with a manual transmission and you can actually have some fun in it.

I bought it from a dealer, practically new, for sub-$15,000. No problems so far, decent mileage and roomy as fuck. :thumbup

My mom has an auto Fit and my friend has a manual Fit and I'd recommend them if not for

i know none will really be fun to drive but it'd be nice if they can merge with freeway traffic better than my 1974 ford courier.

and rapid acceleration is not exactly its forte. You'll get there, but maybe not as quickly as you'd like. I'd be intrigued in the Ford Fiesta/Focus but have zero experience with those.

Dude in my hood is a Korean War vet, in his 80's, as dyed-in-the-wool American old school as you can get.

And he loves his Honda Fit.
