another car thread: new, econobox x2

Or blow the whole 40 large on a new Volt.

Best. Commuter. Ever.

ratmobile isnt' going anywhere. german money pit probably is

well, maybe you're a liar mr bling. german money pit at least starts after sitting for a weekend....

Dude, srsly, Nissan cube. I've had one for a year and I love it! Get it with a manual transmission and you can actually have some fun in it.

I bought it from a dealer, practically new, for sub-$15,000. No problems so far, decent mileage and roomy as fuck. :thumbup

i love the cube design.
practically new? does that mean it was the demo car or a recent lease return or something?

My wife needed a newer car so I bought her a low mile lease return that was loaded with options, and it was a S model too. It's a lot of fun to drive and it has the sport package and 17" wheels. It's a Clubman - so it has two doors on the passenger side. This is what she wanted so I got it for her. :)

hahahahahahahahaha. no more german moneypits till i can afford to get a new one every time the warranty is up.

I've got a pretty new John Cooper Works on my used line right now.

For a reliable commuter, I'd highly advise picking one up. If you are profoundly retarded that is.

But really, you can't lose with the Fit. If you just don't want that dinky little thing then a lot of the Ford guys I know have been buying the new Focus. And if Ford techs are willing to buy their own stuff, then I'm guessing Ford finally did it right this time.

interesting bit of data there. have any friends in the kia world?

thanks all for the input. i am surprised there haven't been any links dumped to stories like "suchandsuch cited for having the worst piece of shit cars that everyone is buying because they're pretty: and they're not GERMAN!"

or forum links to exploding transmissions and stuff. maybe since these are the bargain basement models there aren't enthusiasts to blow minor problems out of proportion?

anyway, it seems that all these appliance cars are roughly equivalent and it'll come down to test drives. barf delivers again!

Volts are super fun until you run out of juice and go into hybrid mode, then they are super boring.

It's Chevy's loss leader. People come in to look at the Volt (which even with the $40k price Chevy loses money on) and leave with a Cruze or something.

don't tempt me. your reviews on here put it on my radar.

The two door Cadillac ELR variant will be out a year from now. Much more powerful gasoline engine. Not quite sure what they're doing with that but I'm sure it'll make it faster. And the Volt as is will already surprise some people at how quick it is in city speeds.

It's also a halo car. More so than even the mighty Corvette ZR1. It's the most technologically advanced vehicle GM has. I heard somewhere that more lines of code were written for all of the Volt's controllers than for everything in Boeing's new 787.

Bling, I have some experience with Kia. I worked for awhile at a Nissan/Kia dealership. I will tell you this: the technicians HATED the entire Kia lineup. We used to joke that the service drive was for Nissan and the tow truck entrance was for Kia. Blown motors with less than 10K weren't uncommon. The worst part is that the warranty is misleading. They try to make the buyer believe that he/she has a 10/100,000 warranty, but there are A LOT of things that aren't covered. Furthermore, I've never seen a company that will jump through so many hoops to try to deny warranty claims. one of the blown motor vehicles that I mentioned (had 2300 miles on it) had the claim denied because the owner couldn't produce any maintenance records. WTF?

Summary: Kia is getting better, but they are nowhere near where they need to be yet. Maybe another 5-10 years and they'll get there.

My Kia Soul that I bought in May of last year has over 40K miles on with zero times visiting deallership. I live in SF and work in Pleasant Hill. I'd buy it again.

thanks aaron, how long ago were you at the dealer?

I was there for about a year, between real jobs. 2010-2011. Once you see one of those things up on a rack, and start looking at build quality, you'll know what I'm talking about. As I have said, they've come a long way, but they haven't caught up to Hyundai yet. I think they'll get there, though.

$26K wholesale!

The leases on them are pretty damn cheap too. Cheap enough if you commute, you CAN own two cars with the gas savings.

:laughing

Maybe they were just between real employees. Not sure what your capacity at the dealership was, but I assure you working for a dealership is a real job. And I damn sure know who makes my product.

Hyundai owns 40% of Kia and the two car lines share platforms.

Apologies for my mistake. As of July of 2011, I believe that you are right. Still, the build quality is very different. Ask any Kia tech who has worked on other lines (other than Ford/Chevy, etc) how the build quality is.
