From a history nut's perspective: I have a hard time spitting out "African-American" because it reminds me that one of the most lingering aspects of American racism is that many in the mainstream forget that Africans are one of the oldest immigrant groups in the US, way more than most of the Irish, Italian and other 19th-century and early 20th century hard-times immigrants that are often touted as the American "success story."
The point needs to be made over and over again that they ARE as American as apple pie, but centuries of racism have somehow persisted that they are "more" different than other incoming groups. This particularly comes up when the outraged white American wishes or insists that they "just go back to Africa." Geez, we tried that way back in Liberia days after the Civil War. Most intellectually honest black Americans are glad they're here, and those who persist in returning to Africa often don't last long in the poverty, filth and overwhelming hopelessness of that poor continent. Racism continues to be a pain in the ass that it persists, but ya get way more goodies and opportunity here, in a society that has tried to address and re-dress it's past sins.

And in Hispanic America, African people, free or slave, began arriving with Cortes and possibly even before that. I have Hispanic black ancestors that fell within that category, some were sailors, some were probably slaves. But the influences of this group has given us distinctive and wonderful contributions to music, art, etc etc that is the COMPOSITE of what we call "American" (both in Anglo and Hispanic Americas). Years ago, when I was visiting India, I found myself homesick for the American voice of Ray Charles, and realized how deep-seated our feelings are, even when intellectually told otherwise.
So, no, leave the African-American name for dudes like Obama's father, people actually from Africa within the century at least or perhaps their children, if they chose to stick to some kind of African ways (language, urban enclave, etc etc).
And in the context of the flood of illegals, even the worst racist white nativist is probably figuring out that black Americans are way more invested in traditional American society and culture than ungrateful, empowered immigrants who want this country to be more like Latin America or whatever. So, no,when I see black faces in this country, I wish for the day we all just see Americans or some kind of immigrant, nothing else. And really, it is happening, it's changed so much in my lifetime. I can't communicate how proud and grateful I am that my sons are so much more relaxed with diversity and non-judgemental than my generation was....

I referred to one of my friends as African American during a conversation and he damn near screamed at me "I'm black and you're white don't give me that African American bullshit". All I could say was "Alright PK, whatever you say brother". He looked at me for a second squinted his eyes and said "That's better".

We never mentioned it again but I have been corrected by other African Americans to refer to them as such. No win?
 
Well, perhaps, just perhaps mind you, you might try carrying on conversations without mentioning race, unless there is some REAL need. Real need means just that. WHY in the fuck would you mention a friend's race? From the sound I'd say he probably does not consider you one. Is there some point?

Parenthetically this is a candidate for one of the more fucked up trainwreck threads of the month. White folks telling black folks how they are supposed to act, think and talk about themselves is about FUCKING STUPID AS CAN BE.
