Barf Slow Your Roll" Lane Splitting Campaign

Lanesplitting is legal...why thank the cagers because you are doing something that is legal?

In my commute to work, I see cagers all the time doing dumb shit. They can not even understand the concept of the following:

Do not block the intersection

Solid white lines are not to be crossed.

Right turn on red after stop.

Look and signal before lane change.

Slower traffic use turn outs.

And a few more.

Oh and the big one......hands free cell phone use. Which is hard to enforce. I see it all the time. I think they realized that enforcing a law restricting lane splitting would be like enforcing the hands free cell phone law....very hard to do. I've seldom seen a cop in my two years of doing my daily commute, and when I do, they are stuck in traffic unless they are on a bike.

Now, how in the world will a cop in a car catch a lane splitter? Ok lights come on, but traffic is locked, no where for anyone to move but there is a cop car sitting there with lights on meaning now the cagers with no where to go now need to find somewhere to go to let the cop move.

Do you think they cagers one bit about my opinion of them? Nope.

Why are some cagers startled by lane splitters and others are not? Seems the ones that are startled have a problem and is not the responsibility of the lane splitter. The splitter could be well within a safe speed and still startle someone.

I've been startled by a splitter when driving, why cause I was not paying attention and was daydreaming. By fault.....not the splitter. The speed of the splitter had nothing to do with it, my mental state did.

The lack of logical reasoning is great around here. Everything seems to be based solely on emotions.

+1

For me, I think we should have something that says Thanks for Sharing so the cagers get a clear positive message. And then in the motorcycle community we have an SYR campaign. If we provide just the delta to the cagers, most will just focus on that and those that are not supporting SYR.

I agree - we're dealing with Driver and Rider awareness; Showing the 4wheeled community that the 2wheeled community is aware of their concerns and acting responsibly sounds like the proper 2-pronged approach.

(apologies to LaneSplittingIsLegal.com)

It's interesting that you and I came up with very similar ideas but I liked your Delta 15 much better. But I actually used the BARF logo as I feel BARF/Budman and Surj, have been very instrumental in the awareness to our State and therefore, BARF should be in the message. I was thinking printed on hi-vis vests ;)

I actually used Surj's site graphics as well, but wanted to have a rider and a vehicle shown with the rider waving Thanks (hand up like a right turn :laughing).

Roger that. I'll be sticking to the 15MPH Delta. Don't really do much more anyways.

I've thought of doing a "Thank You For Sharing" thing for a few years now.

But I was just thinking a sticker on the top case or going ghetto with reflective tape on the back of my jacket.

I was imagining 2 cars, like Surj's LSIL graphic and "Thank You For Sharing" between the cars, where the moto lives now.

Good thought. I would like something to use while riding, though. I ain't a t-shirt and shorts kind of biker. :teeth The SYR thing is too esoteric.
(I need an armband waving thanks to drivers who move for me. It gets tiring trying to thank all the nice people with your left hand.)

I used an on-line t-shirt designer as I don't have graphic software at work - See next:

That's what I was thinking too - A Hi-Viz vest sporting the message/messages. And I like the BARF logo but, like the ADVRider "FYFF", it's a bit "inside" for the general population: looks like we're saying F U to them. :2cents

Nothing wrong with being respectful and acknowledging a driver.

You guys don't sit in MC Safety committees where the bad boy practices are being discussed and what to do about them. It might change your opinion if you did. I have to believe the CHP and others are discussing this stuff too.

I was there when the DMV said "we should ban lane sharing". It was a :wtf moment. I called several allies in the Committee jumped on board with me and said "hell no. Educate instead". When I led the charge for that I had the DMV guy spitting mad at me.. he was a top dog safety analyst and sure did not like a guy who was not being paid to be there and from something called barf calling BS on what he wanted.

That education, became the guidelines and the media blitz about it being legal.

You can sit on your hands and then raise a finger when we are limited to 30 MPH or whatever. Personally I want to be more proactive, because I see how that actually works behind the scenes with State Agencies and with our Government reps too.

Solidifying the practice as not being invasive and helping promote a better public opinion is a win IMO.

And not trying is just that. Not trying.

And yeah.. I get emotional about this. Have been ever since I wiped the spit of my face.

What motorists misunderstand the most is that it is a safer position laterally than medially for a motorcycle in traffic. Most people do not understand WHY we are even IN the Split Zone in the first place. They believe it is riskier to be in the Split Zone than behind them. To them it appears higher risk to be between cars laterally than medially. THIS is what needs to change, which is why I NEVER advocated for calling it lane "splitting." It really is about SHARING the lane.

IF WE SHARE WE BOTH GET THERE!

We have to look at this from THEIR perspective in order to run an effective PR campaign. IMO Saying "thanks" is really missing the point even though it is a polite gesture.

What we should be focused on are the key markers of motorist perception.

1) Why do we share lanes
2) Why this benefits motorists
3) What is responsible lane sharing?

I love the hi-viz green/yellow/orange vests. Can we all get away from the concept of lanesplitting finally and focus on a PR campaign that promotes sharing?

Edit* SHARING IS CARING, MON SHAREY, MY SHARONA

You can counteract the asshats by, if you are comfortable doing so, giving cars that move to let you have more room a little wave in thanks. Then they feel included in your progress and feel just a tiny bit appreciated.

Since several of us are on the "Thanks for sharing" bandwagon. Can someone do a research on materials that would stay on the back of a helmet or leathers? Or we could do jerseys like runners, motocross, etc use for id. If it would be big enough, I still would like an armband.

"Thanks for sharing" with a waving hand in the background works for me.
:wave

Budman, I think you have to remind people every-single-time this subject is up about how we got to where we are on this lane sharing road. Either bikers don't remember very well, or just don't pay attention very well.

Clutch. Surj and I will def. Get some stuff together.
Some good ideas. I sure want to consolidate.

So don't run too hard. Love the idea of a thank you sweat band you can wear on anything.
Shirts, stickers. Yeah. Yup yup.

I really like Jake's "if we share we both get there" slogan since it also reminds people that sharing helps alleviate traffic.

Thanks for keeping on, budman. I already share within the guidelines and wave when I can. I'd be down for wearing something that advertises our good intentions, too. Square for sure, but hi-viz vests would have a lot more real estate than arm/sweat bands. I'd wear one.

Interesting. I like the thanks for sharing idea a lot. The slow your roll might be difficult to encapsulate in a iconic image. I will think about some ideas.

Budman, let me know if you need help with designs, or shirts. I would be happy to help. I got the pride tshirts printed for a great price. :thumbup

Been doing my best to "Slow my roll" for a bit now. I think the logic is indisputable, and have noticed many positive results :thumbup

Looking forward to cool T-shirts (NOT IN BLACK ! .. Please :twofinger )

Yeah, I like that idea too. It's even better than the old standard, "Lane sharing is caring." :teeth

But, I need all the "slimming" help I can get. :(

As do I. :) I don't know that most drivers will understand what is meant by "Slow Your Roll."

That's exactly why there should be two campaigns: One for Auto community and one for the Moto community.

You've got to use the appropriate parlance for the target audience: Moto-speak for riders (of course) and very plain, conventional language for everyone else.
