Barf Slow Your Roll" Lane Splitting Campaign

I'm in. Always have been.

I think a big PR campaign could get some traction and free publicity. Start with a name, web address and companion logo distributed as patches and stickers, sort of like a MC. Just as a corny example, say the sticker says:

I think proper marketing it is the way to go.

You meet the nicest people on a Honda.

I'm in by default.

My usual style is 5-10 over and drop back in line when I get up to around 50mph.

I'm in(though I've always been since I'm a noob to splitting so slow speeds and small deltas are my comfort zone).

I think it is a great initiative and applaud the effort going into changing public perception.

Did you not read the comment and see the laughing face?

As well you're putting words in my mouth - I never said "idiot dirt bikers": that link is YOURS.
"Idiot Dirtbikers" was the thread for the link that I posted.

"You are...:laughing " Is a a bit too cryptic for me to understand that you were shaming those riders, not supporting their behavior. Perhaps a bit more description of your purpose would have avoided this confusion. Ride on. :ride
(Below 50 while splitting, please.) :p

I acknowledge the PRIVLEDGE it is to split lanes.

Or privilege even.

Agree 100%. When you ride in public you are an ambassador for motorcycling whether you realize it or not. Marketing/publicity can be huge. I make the effort every day as it is better to lane split slowly and legally than not at all. Good stuff.

No, you linked to the "Hooligan Santa Cruz" vid in jumph4x's sig, as did I. It was a tounge-in-cheek toward his comment that he needed to be in this thread, that's all. No endorsement and no slam: neutral observation of something that struck me as funny.

I get heated about this kind of activity too, probably for the same reasons it irks you. I think we're on the same side of the issue but short of castration, yelling at these guys only serves to entertainment them.

And I don't split over 50; I will pass in an adjacent lane though, when it's clear.

There is no such thing as a "differential" speedometer. Asking riders to obey a 15 mph speed differential is no different than asking them to just not split much faster than the cages they're passing. That's fine, and all, but any effort to codify a numerical differential is doomed to failure in the absence of a mythical differential speedometer.

For one, without such a device, no one really knows how much faster than the cages they're riding. If it becomes a "law" that one cannot exceed a 15 mph differential, there's no rigorous means of complying. And who wants to befuddle their riding brain with mental math calculations while splitting? What, are they supposed to crane their necks to see the speed readout on the cage dashboards, and compare to the reading on their moto?

I'll continue to employ the basic speed rule while splitting.

I beat you to this by (30) years, Budman! :twofinger

Lex

I missed seeing the poster and the interview with ABC NEWS with Van Amberg...:laughing

How did that happen?? :teeth

Thanks all whom have responded.

Getting traction for this will be a key to getting the word out that Motorcyclist are trying to overcome the asshatery that is sometimes seen.

15mph = 22ft/sec
Honda Civic ~15ft long
CBR600 ~6ft long

15mph delta should take about a second to pass the little cars; long for bigger ones.
Another rule of thumb is that 5mph = walking speed, 10mph = running speed, 15mph = bicycle speed.

Still another goes straight to the point of limiting speed differential:

Split at a speed that permits you to slow to traffic speed and avoid a crash if the vehicle 2 car-lengths ahead suddenly changes lanes.

I'm in too. I just ask you guys who think I split too slow to give me a second or two to move over and let you pass. even though I check my 6 constantly, every once in a while someone will come up behind me without me knowing, and I get over a soon as I can, but it might mean passing 2-3 cars before I can find a gap to move over. just because you disagree or don't want to split slow, don't give the rest of us grief for doing so.

Just throwing this out there. I'm sure there are more artistic BARFERs

EDIT: Corrected "STR" to "SYR"

This kind of "it's too hard" talk kills reasonable conversations pretty quickly. It's easy to know how much faster you're going than surrounding traffic, and anyone who finds this to be too difficult shouldn't be riding, let alone splitting.

1. Find some parked cars.
2. Ride past them at 5 MPH, memorize how that looks / feels.
3. Repeat at 10 MPH, then 15 MPH.
4. Do this now and again, to remind yourself what particular deltas feel like. Hell, you can do this whenever you're riding through stopped traffic, or on residential streets.

Problem solved.

In by default as well.

Anything faster than 15 is scary, hell, 10 is scary at times depending on the traffic.

You miss the point... a band of merry splitters want the vehicle code modified to create a 15 MPH differential limit on splitting. Yet all they can offer up is a seat of the pants gut-feel for how that should be measured. How about we move toward that - a gut-feeling to guide our splitting in the current "not illegal" arena - rather than some stupid specific number. What will stand up in court when you go to fight your speeding ticket? A gut feeling? Or a measured differential rate?

Again, the basic speed rule turns out to be the right one to follow.

The 15mph speed differential comes from a UC Berkeley study. Not the guy feeling of some cagers, as you put it.

No, I'm not putting anything on cagers. Please read more carefully.

Surj suggested I go calibrate my butt, to get a gut-feeling for what various speed differentials feel like. Fine, and good, nothing wrong with practice and improving skills. Though I already have an excellent feeling for what a safe splitting differential is, honed through 15 years of combat commuting.

But back to my point... any effort to codify, in the CVC, a speed "differential" is doomed to failure, for the very simple reason that while we have speedometers on our vehicles (bikes and cages alike) NONE of us have "differential speedometers" on our bikes. What we do have, and can develop and hone and refine over time, is a healthy recognition of and regard for, what a safe differential speed feels like.

I ride and split with respect for the basic speed rule... what more is needed? Certainly not some unfeasible codified restriction on an intangible and unmeasured differential velocity.
