New jobby job shades?

Got one of my buddies on DayZ. Has never ever played a FPS on a PC before. We figured a good workaround for not having dedicated PC mics. Turn on Xbox, start a party, and use that as our chat. Then fire up PC and hook up in DayZ.

Unfortunately the first time I found him, he had no weapons and a fucking train of about 10 zombies on him. All I had was the big sniper and a PDW with not many bullets left, so we ran. Some fuckface took us both out while we were running to the Balota airfield. Fuck. AS50s don't exactly grow on trees. :(

yea new job in santa clara, so maybe i can save up for a better laptop and get on some dayz in the near future.also wanna check out sleeping dogs. has pretty good reviews on amazon.

Visuals look awesome. But that guy has a super beast PC. Game itself looks like True Crime.

DayZ will probably be a standalone game pretty soon here, so that might be a good time to pull the trigger on it instead of getting on a glitchy as all hell beta. Shit the other day, I opened a fence...which the game saw fit to slam into me, breaking my arms and legs and knocking me out.

Nope. None around me. Gate opened into me and physically moved me and smashed me me against a fence. The little military compound with the four deer stands at the Balota airfield.

So I went and got a new video card. Remembered the advice about getting one with 2GB because I have a big monitor. The GTX 570 is mostly only available (besides online) in 1.2GB. Saw that the 560 Ti and 660 come in 2GB. Then I saw the HD7870 and it was a little cheaper than the 660, so I got a Diamond Radeon 7870 Ghz Black Double Diamond edition (which is their way of saying factory overclocked).

This a good card? Or should I take it back and get the EVGA GTX 660 that was like $40 more? The non overclocked HD7870 Ghz seemed pretty even with the 660 and was less power hungry in the comparisons I saw on my phone.....as I was ignored by all the Fry's salesmen. Psssh, as if they'd be any help anyways.

My little project this weekend will be to crack open my rig and install that monster. Damn thing feels like it weighs more than the typical small notebook computer!

Oooo damn. The Armored Kill DLC is almost here!!!!1!

Welp. On the DayZ front, I've got the game looking damn good now. I run everything at 1920x1080 with high/very high on everything else and it is great.

Now it's just a matter of getting in a server that isn't polluted with hackers. I got killed yesterday by a guy spamming M203 grenades. And every other server I go in has tank traps/sandbags/fencing around all the loot spawns.

Is it crazy that my graphics card is heavier than the actual CPU and motherboard?

yea high end video cards are hefty... my heat sink is pretty huge too for my cpu, it would fill up all that empty space no problem :)

I ran the lame Windows Experience rating thing and of course it scored 7.9 out of 7.9 for graphics. Surprised that the bottleneck wasn't my old CPU (which scored 7.0), but it's the HD transfer rate which was only 5.9.

But fuck that noise. I'm not spending any more money on this thing going to a RAID setup or using a solid state drive. It's fast enough.

yea all my scores at 7.7 for everything but 5.9 for hard disk, and I have an SSD. i wouldn't worry about the score really doesnt mean much

I downloaded the free edition of 3dmark.

My card scored P14900something. But the CPU scored P8000something. When I looked up others with the same CPU (Phenom x4 9750) they had waaaay higher scores. How'd they do that? Dual CPUs or something? Buddy says cooling has a lot to do with it.

cooling could certainly be part of it. if cpu gets too hot it throttles down to stop overheating to the point of being damaged.

DayZ hasn't seen any updates in a while, I assume they are working on the standalone game that is coming out soon (September?)
Due to the lack of updates some big bugs are still in there, and hacking is prevalent, so I'm playing other games until some improvements are made.

Your graphics are good. My GPU is a solid step down from yours, and I've been able to handle any game I've wanted to play.

+1 on cooling for your CPU. As BrassPremier said, your CPU will throttle down if it gets too hot and throttle back up when it cools down. The picture looks like you're using the stock CPU fan. If you want better cooling, you're going to want a larger heatsink with more fins and a larger fan.

It seems you don't want to spend more money. If so, and your computer is able to handle everything you want it to do, then fuck it.

I would spend like fifty bucks or something on upgrading the CPU cooling if it made a noticeable performance difference. I passed by all that stuff at Frys when I bought the power supply, but it looked a little like the stickers, aluminum wings, and lighted washer nozzles section at Pep Boys.

I'd put a bigger sink and fan on, but I'm not doing liquid cooling with so many lights it looks like the flux capacitor. I don't mind being a little geeky, but I'm not going for virginity level-9000 here.

Since I'm almost certain the standalone DayZ is going to be even more taxing on the system. Probably a good idea looking into this heat sink situation.

The CPU heatsink I use is right down your alley. It's less than fifty bucks, it does a good job of cooling, and most importantly, it's quiet.

But is it going to give you noticeable performance? Honestly, most likely not. You're better off spending that $50 towards an SDD. The plus side of a heatsink, it's transferable. If you build a new desktop in the future, you won't have to use the shitty one that comes with your CPU.

I can take a picture for you when I get home. It's a big heatsink.
