I won't get into why Americans and Europeans have differing tastes in sports, but I just wanna say something about ice racing. Growing up in Russia, I remember watching ice racing, as it's portrayed in this movie, on TV. Now, that was back in the late 80's, early 90's. I haven't been back since and I don't know what their TV is like now. But I distinctly remember seeing bikes doing circles on ice with these monster spikes -- all cornerspeed, no slip. That's quite a bit different from "regular" speedway. There's also something called ice speedway, where they essentially use speedway bikes on ice with smaller and fewer spikes on much tighter ovals. Whether the bikes slide or not makes all the difference in the world. Personally, I think if you're gonna do ice racing, do it right and drag your handlebars on the floor.
I also recall first seeing ice racing in the US (I've been going to spectate for the past few years in upstate NY). It takes place on Lake George in February as part of a whole winter festival and it's very very cool. You get to walk on the lake and take in spectacular views, there's helicopter rides, people riding bikes and snowmobiles all over the lake, hot dogs, and all that shit. And the racing is nice. It's a full couple of days with all kinds of classes of dirtbikes sliding all over the place. Newbies, ultra fast amateurs, crazy fast up and coming little kids -- just like a good club racing scene should be. But every time I go see it with new people, I try to tell them about this Russian/Scandinavian type of ice racing and no one understands. It was a breath of fresh air to watch this flick and actually made me wanna get out-there and maybe go to Siberia for a sabbatical and get on a proper ice bike. Siberian winter, free flowing vodka, and ice bikes -- what could be better? Oh, and here's a full heat for your pleasure:

that's pretty rad. would be cool to strap a rotating camera on the riders right rear swingarm.
I think Wisconsin might have something similiar, can't recall.
