I don’t know if this is the right place for this,
Want to get my wife some pepper spray, with all this violence against Asians at the minute I want her to be safe, was wonder what kind of pepper spray Leo’s use and can the public buy it

Rei sells some, different sizes. I carried it when backpacking against bears but never used it. I assume if the wind blows in the wrong direction you have a problem.

Aren't most of the sprays actually streams? vs, like, a cloud of Lysol? Not saying being downwind is a good idea, but I don't if in a practical sense it's as bad as what the other guy (should) be getting.

Which brings me to my PSA for Friday. :teeth If you buy something like this, you need to learn how it works and practice with it with some frequency. Trust me, you can forget your first name and where you live when someone confronts you on the street (or in Tom G's case, a bear gets pissy with him). This isn't the time to try to figure out whether you're upwind or downwind or if it comes out in a stream or as a spray. :)

I’ll teach her how to use it lol I did security for almost 20 years

You should be able to buy whatever pepper spray the police use. If you went to a police uniform supply store they'd sell it there. But that might not even be the best option. Many stores, sporting goods and such, sell pepper spray.

The formulations police typically use are a bit lower than the types they sell to the general public. I believe this allows them to dissipate a little faster. The idea being that if police use pepper spray it will usually involve taking the person into custody a short time later. It doesn't need to last as long. When a civilian uses it, it is designed to fend off an attack and allow the person enough time to get away.

From https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_spray

Personal pepper sprays can range from a low of 0.18% to a high of 3%. Most law enforcement pepper sprays use between 1.3% and 2%.

I'd think you'd want something on the higher 2 to 3% end. It should list this on the container.

Thanks for the reply, was thinking about getting her the gel spray so it don’t blow back in her face if she has to use it

It's sad that parts of this state won't issue concealed carry permits.

One of my twin girls has asked me to get her pepper spray so this is a timely topic for me and I am following it with interest.

Although I am seriously thinking about giving them some basic gun handling lessons so they can get a CCW when they turn 18 before they go to college and then also getting them more advanced training.

i'd prefer Berar Spray, but it's not available. i'm talking about a bear in a can i can spray at someone here not that bear repellent stuff. i want a can that looks like Silly String but a fucking Grizzly Bear comes out!

I don't have any experience using gel spray, but it sounds like a good option.

As long as the grizzly bear is programmed not to attack the person holding the can. :laughing

Then it should spray a berry/honey mix at the assailant first before the bear comes out and hopefully that does the trick. Or hottie grizzly girl pheromones.... just saying they would get a taste of their own medicine at that point.....

i think the momentum of the bear coming out would be sufficient to designate the Bad Guy as the target and bear spray or pepper spray... if i'm deploying that stuff i'm running the other way as soon as i press the button so while i'm not fast... i'm faster than a guy that just had a grizzly bear land on him. i do look like a ham on stilts these days, so hopefully the bear is just too busy figuring out which Bad Guy Limb to gnaw on to notice the tasty dish running away

In California, the minimum age eligible for CCW is 21.

I found this video pretty good with testing on several types to help you choose what's best for you. It's long, but informative, and shows the spray pattern on some cool dummies. I got a pink one for Mrs Cabrito.

Bummer it is 21 in LA also.....

Last I checked, LA is part of California. :twofinger

We all know hard it is for anyone to get a license to carry in counties like LA and Santa Clara, but did you know it's relatively easy in much of the rest of the counties in California.
