Best Shotgun for Home Defense?

Yeah, but for general shooting you want a 12. Ammo is much more prevalent (though 20 is not hard to find) and you want to put as much lead down range as possible.

Birdshot is for birds.:p

BTW, while I disagree with Codger regarding his ammo choice, he's among the few BARFers that actually scare me. The first time I met him, he actually had the previously mentioned Mossberg in hand (not pointed at me).
Fortunately I have not pissed him off, and I don't plan to.

I grew up North Carolina, I think they give us shotguns while still in the cradle. Always big arguments at parties at whether the over-under double barrel shotgun is better than the side-by-side model. :laughing

True story in my tiny home town in NC in the early '80s: a convict escaped from jail in a neighboring town, the escapee was on the run for a couple days and the story was all over the news so everybody was on edge.

In the middle of the night Mr Escaped Con tried to break into a secluded house near the woods (because every house there is "near the woods") while the homeowner was asleep.

The homeowner heard the noise, realized what was up, raised up out of bed while picking up the shotgun leaned against the wall within reach, shot the guy climbing in the window with the shotgun, then went back to sleep. :rofl

And this is why I love Texas and the South, despite it's many shortcomings.

As do I. True story when I lived in Houston about 18 years ago. Guy's had his truck stolen twice from his driveway. Comes home for lunch one day, goes inside to eat and soon after sees a guy breaking into his truck. Grabs his gun and flys out the door. His neighbor sees it as well and the two of them jump on the guy. The perp is strong and fights them off. They chase him down the street and tackle him again. He fights them off again and the chase leads onto the grounds of a local elementary school. The homeowner is fed up, tells the guy to stop or he'll shoot, guy no stop, homeowner shoots him in the back, dead. No charges were filed. Under the laws in Texas, deadly force can be used to stop someone fleeing from the commission of a felony.

Spend the money you would spend on buying the gun, training to use it, practice shells over time, refresher training, the cost of a 20M umbrella policy - oops, my bad, was that just a land shark with a candygram?, and move to a better neighborhood....

How many of the type of 'event,' that you are worried about were reported in the greater Bay Area in 2009? Are there even enough to need to take off your shoes to count that high?

I am a gun owner. I am not for banning the private ownership of guns, however, I do believe that gun, boat, and motorcycle ownership should have a little more involved training as barriers to entry, rather than 'Yes we do take Visa.'

All the gun talk here makes me consider that the sprotbile crowd is A.) Very young, and wants all the forbidden toys from childhood B.) Paranoid as fuck C.) On to some undercurrent socio-poli-twinkie-anarchy vibe, that this old fart isn't feeling D.) Has way too much cash or credit, and isn't thinking about retirement E.) Gets a way different newspaper/set of tv stations than I do

You'll shoot your eye out.

I love you.

you just need to buy this from me and all your problems are solved-the ultimate home defense/Oaklamd invasion/zombie apocalypse self defense weapon! :) 18.5 inch Mossy 500. Barrel shroud, two color reticle (reflex not true Holo-Chinese knockoff) sight with quick release, Knoxx recoil absorbing stock, Knoxx Sidewinder 10- and 6-round clip feed system. Takes 2 1/2 and 3" magnum 12 ga. shells too. Firing mag slugs one handed is kinda fun. :) Zombies, goblins or tangos don't know what hit 'em!

Roman is the only guy you need to listen to in this thread. But, fwiw, I recommend a Remington 870 with the light, which is what I have. After careful consideration to my space here, I have it loaded with #4.

OT:
We had a dude in the 70's try to jump our back fence in Livermore and break into our house.

Made it back over the fence with some of his hand left...

...after meeting our family member and my dads partner Erich.

Erich, the 120lb. black German Shepard Dog. Almost tore the dudes hand off. Also bit him badly on the ass. That sneaky dog would never bark. He'd just wait patiently on the other side of the fence.
