BMW HP2 Sport?

Considering it offers similar performance to a 600cc Japanese Supersport, yes it is expensive, but that's not why people buy one. It's a bit of a work of art, in addition to being a solid sportbike that produces an amazing sound when it's on the pipe.

I don't recall that these bikes sold very well at full list when they came out. I'll bet the challenge today is finding the right buyer, someone who appreciates what this bike was, since one could have a 2012 S1000RR with full warranty for only a few grand more.

I think I've seen on in my neighborhood, the guy painted it himself. Really sexy bike. And great if you want something virtually no-one has.
 
I wouldn't mind if an HP2s was ripped around the track for a few hundred miles.. Shoot i'd do the same thing.:)

Same. I'm looking for a good track day bike that can also do some duty on the street and not look like a hunk of shit when I walk past it in the garage every day. And something I'll still enjoy owning 10 years from now if it's still in one piece. This would definately fit the bill.

I'm still not 100% sure my back/hip is going to allow me to ride a sportbike again though.

Hmm. Unless he crashed it, I can't imagine someone painting an HP2s!

Maybe he had an R1200S Boxer Cup?

I've spent quite a bit of time on one. Very fun bike to ride - excellent suspension, fun motor, and build quality in another league. The telelever front takes some getting used to if you're coming from standard forks, can feel a bit numb. Doesn't dive on braking which is nice but strange. Also the shaft drive, can jack a little bit and be a hair snatchier than chain.

Final thing, you should be aware that at 20k miles BMW recommends a very extensive rebuild (pistons rods etc) which is also very expensive. But supposedly that's just "to maintain optimum performance."

Bottom line, it's a great street and track bike (just don't crash it, that CF is expensive and very hard to find, supp. made by an F1 supplier in limited runs). At $10.5 it's a downright bargain, buy it.

I did a similar thing with my Beemer- found it on CL, bought it sight unseen, shipped from Oregon via Federal. Same deal as you- got a feel for the seller, talked on the phone, and had the BS detectors on high alert. Ask for a very specific picture too to make sure you're getting the real deal. Funny thing for me was when the shippers opened their cargo bay doors, the bike was prominently displaying a "CalBMW" license pate frame! :laughing

Given the model of bike you are lusting after, I think you'll be alright.
 
i sat on one of those before. they're freakin tall.

Simple solution is to hire a BMW dealer in Houston to do a PPI on the bike. Ask them to verify identify of the guy for you. Maybe offer them a few bucks to allow shipment directly from their shop, obviously with a waiver of liability from you.

If the background work is correct, a phone call to the dealer may be all that's necessary. I bet they know this guy and the bike.
 
Well, the guy still hasn't gotten back to me. Either really busy, or he's rethinking his price!

RE the boxer comment...

I rode an old Paris Dakar GS100 and a K75 within days of each other, a few months back...

K75? For as 'legendary' as people pegged that bike, I was completely underwhelmed. No torque, and didn't make that much power on the high end, either. It handled better than a CB650, but it paled in comparison to anything from the early 90s onward.

The GS, however... It was big, and it felt like I was riding a tractor, but I'll be damned if that bike didn't have character. I'd love to find an older R65/R80 and putz across the countryside. What a fun engine... Ain't a V4, but for that old time 'proper motorbike' feeling, it was great.

Not referencing the HP2 specifically, moreso BMW's boxer format in general, in response to this comment from Stan....

It's almost like an age thing. In my twenties, I would have hated the boxer motor, but in my thirties, I come to appreciate them!

That price wouldn't be unreasonable for a regular r12s, and those are hard to find. For a piece of unobtanium like this, it's a steal. How rare is it? I saw one at a BMW track day once, and no one one here is claiming to have ridden one in real life.

Funny part about that is if you sat on both the BMWs blinfolded and blipped the throttle, you have a hard time telling which was which. :laughing

That thing is cool and all, especially if you're an old air-head fan(I grew up lusting after an Udo Gietl built R90S) and it might even be a good investment but, I think this is the one you want Stan... :party
