So me and my buddy figured one of the best mods we could do with the least amount of expense was to lose weight.

And then we thought... do we actually lose/burn calories while riding?

I would assume we do... just not sure how much...:thumbup

Nice try! Skip the gym, go for a ride. Works for me! :)

This has been brought up a few times...

The answer is, no, don't kid yourself. For SOME it's a workout, but if you are serious about losing weight, then there is no substitute for real exercise.

You will burn more calories on a spirited ride than on he couch. You will also eat less potato chips while riding than watching tv. It might not be the same as your spinning class but it's a damn sight better than nawt. But to the OPs q I'm also interested if anyone has real info/stats out there.

Only lazy people think of alternatives like this. Why don't you ride your twisties on a bicycle? It's still consider riding. :laughing:laughing

Well we do work out. My buddy dropped 30 lbs and I just dropped 5 since I started 2 weeks ago.

We just got curious whether riding helps with burning cause we all do that a lot anyways...

I see those harley guys that ride everywhere and they're usually fat, so my guess is no. :(

Hot day + full leathers = weight loss

sweat those toxins out! :laughing

On a related note, how much would serious track riding burn? Say in a 30 minute session at a decent A pace? All that sweating in itself will drop you a pound in water weight.

If you want to burn calories while riding, ride a dirt bike.

Riding on a motocross track is good, but getting stuck down in a deep ravine at Carnegie seems to work pretty well too. :teeth

Picking up a thumper that is upside down on a steep hill or pushing one a mile or two after it has died can be a great workout. Riding on the street is not much of a workout. A bicycle is probably your best bet if you want to get some exercise.

^^^ Hey! My BMW has never left me sitting in 2 years. :x

OP: According to my calorie monitoring app, motocross riding burns 167 calories per 30 minutes. Nothing about street riding.

I've actually read that you burn approximately 170 calories an hour more riding a motorcycle compared to driving a car simply due to things like having to sit against the wind, and the simple fact that even a cruiser requires more work to ride than sitting in a cage.

Hard track riding I would imagine burns a lot more, but I doubt anyone does enough of that for that to be considered a primary workout...seems like even MotoGP guys gotta have a side workout of some variety to stay in shape for riding, but the physical demands of that kind of riding are no joke, either.

Exactly..There is riding...And there is RIDING, dirt can provide a workout, like nothing else..because, sometimes its a matter of necessity, to get out of the spot your in.

There's a lot more than just calorie burn, too - you have to think about heart rate. Any ride where my heart rate is over 130 bpm for the whole thing is probably not a ride I want a cop to see.
