Cheaters in the carpool lane.

Less Congestion sure, less pollutants? Not necessarily. The bar is way way lower for bikes who only in the last several needed to get cats from the factory

Not necessarily, but still totally possible. A typical non-literbike gets ~50mpg on the freeway. Pollutants are measured in PPM, which means a 50mpg motorcycle emitting 4x the pollution of a 13mpg truck is actually equally as polluting. 4x the pollutants in PPM, but only 1/4 the volume of exhaust gasses.

Of course, currently laws ignore this entirely, which is why a 5.7L V8 can pass smog, while your little aging 4-banger is failing and being labeled as a gross polluter even though it produces fewer pollutants per mile.

Good that you added that last part in.:thumbup

Yes, it's not cheating if you're using the HOV lane during the hours outside what's posted on the sign. Then the lane is for anyone. =]

Eyeball the clock and make sure to read the carpool signs. I've "cheated" many a time, but that is because carpool lanes are only 'active' during certain parts of the day. You are free to drive in the carpool lane for more than half the day.

I used to have to drive 87 from 85 to 101 in the AM and from 101 to 85 in the PM. At least once a week, on my PM drive, I'd see the same white/grey haired guy in the HOV lane, alone in his light blue convertible 2-seater, with the top down, flying past the back-ups. Pissed me off every day.

I think most of us are assuming that the people here on Barf have a normal level of intelligence and are already aware of that, and refer to the "cheating" as during the commute times when it's not allowed. :nerd

But since the assumption can't be 100%, stating the obvious may be needed for the 1% that actually may not know this.

What's really funny is people that think they HAVE to be in the carpool lane because they have a passenger. Plenty of times in very light traffic(during the commute times), I've seen cars with 2 people in the carpool lane while all other lanes are passing them like crazy. :laughing

Man that pisses me off! :laughing I've gotten better with my road rage, but it's hard when there's so much stupidity going on around you...

This is also why they introduced "air pumps" to vehicles' emission systems back in the 70's. Increase the volume of the exhaust by pumping fresh air in, therefore lowering the PPM. Brilliant move, right there. Talk about letter of the law compliance, can you imagine the brainstorming session where some smartass thought that one up and they all realized it would work. :laughing

There is actually a test on newer vehicles to verify you aren't doing just what you described, it's the CO test IIRC

jettas as late as 2005 if i recall correctly, have this.

What pisses me off is that just when the priuses are about to be kicked out of the carpool lane, Sacramento extended the idiot pass for hybrid cars and is talking about issuing additional ones! :wtf

I know that on 80 WB in the morning, the HOV lane is often slower than the other lanes due to all of the people using it, many of them prius drivers!

The carpool cheaters don't piss me off as much as the tools that go 60. Cheaters also tend to be speeders.

you have to look at the back of their vehicle

Where can I buy this!?!?!?

Years ago a guy driving a load of stiffs got pulled over for using the car pool lane. He was transporting a few deceased people to a morgue and figured that dead people were still people. If I remember right, he went to court and lost.

I cheat in the carpool lane all the time. I drive a dark SUV with factory tinted windows, and when I see a CHP or pass by one, I just drive along as if I belong there. No sudden movements, no trying to get back in non HOV lane, just keep it trucking. If the CHP can't see into the backseat they may not stop you just to check. They'll stop the cars they can see into for sure. I find it incredibly stupid to sit there in gridlock traffic wasting my life away. The hell with the rules and the fines. Even if I do get a ticket I will fight it and most likely win. And if that doesn't work I can afford the ticket. I'm more special than all those suckers sitting there texting and ramming into each other up the arse.

:laughing You win the, "fuck you points," contest.

Until the next bike punches a mirror off your SUV then he wins. :laughing

I am all for an extension of the law so that people over 6'2 or over 250lbs count as two people. We are already paying more for everything. :x

and the douchebags that stay in the exit lane till the last second, and then jump back onto the freeway.

either one of those types piss me off, even if it doesn't affect me at all.

Or the ass clown that gets in the car pool lane just to pass and then gets in front you and has to mash on his brakes ....damn that pisses me off. :mad

Or the monkeys that you are kinda racing and playing with who cheat and hop in the CP lane.....lame!
