Colorful CHP's

So far I've heard that they're fantastic to drive. They've been compared to the Chargers in terms of performance, but with more interior space. We'll see reliability measures in 6 months or so.

I remember when we switched to Explorers, the transmission blew like clockwork every 30k miles.
i was on my way to t-hill last month. doing 55 or so in the slow lane with my trailer. a CHiPpie came hauling ass without lights on and i swear my whole truck shook when that explorer passed me.

point being, no wonder they’re blowing transmissions like crazy. 😆😆😆

The grey one spotted @9am Sunday morning in a residential Santa Cruz neighborhood making a traffic stop for homeless vehicle making California stop.

As a wannabe CHP rider / driver , all I’m saying is… one day I just want to hold one of those cruisers wide open,…..
Geez 🤪

I just had an unfortunate experience going down 280 in San Jose where my bike lost all power while I was in the fast lane - turns out I was the idiot who forgot he had a dodgy fuel gauge and the trip meter was wrong, since I disconnected the battery last week... So just a fuel issue...Thank God for AAA membership!

Anyway, moving on from my idiocy...

While I was stuck in the median, one of the less-than-colorful CHP Dodge Durangos showed up to check on me. The officer and I chatted for a few minutes, but he told me that CHP there has two of them, but only one is currently on the road, since another cop crashed into the other one...! He was very nice and lit up the lights for me to show what it would look like if it was behind me - multiple in-grille lights and the light strip round the top of the windshield is basically invisible when off (and VERY visible when on!). No light bar or roofrack, but some tiny posts sticking up on the roof, like little antennae. He said even he was shocked how many drivers just zoom past him without noticing, until it's too late.

Those CHP Durangos are for sure STEALTHY.

I wonder if they were designed by someone in house or if they hired a outside consultant

As someone who grew up outside of California, this thread is funny. Up in Washington State both the WSP and county mounties routinely drove unmarked vehicles. When I was in high school, a VERY long time ago, Thurston County Sheriff's ran an Impala two door hardtop, jacked up in the back as was the style of the day, big meats and all that. They'd seized it in a drug bust, and they loved to do speed enforcement with it. I was also pulled over by a King County Sheriff Deputy Dodge Dart with a 340 and lights in the grill. This kind of stuff isn't new, just new to you.

In the UK I saw an all black R1 with blue LED's in the turn signals, and with a rider in black leathers and a single badge shaped patch on his chest pull over some guys on a group ride that he'd pushed, then lit up when they reacted.

I remember, back in the late 60’s, when the Mountain View PD bought a number of hemi powered Road Runners. I wish I had one of those.

In the 1990's, I saw an unmarked two tone tan trans am with the red/blues embedded in the front grill and back window who had pulled someone over by the Emily Renzel Ponds on E Bayshore Rd. Then we stopped racing there.

Sort of like this

is it safe to assume that any vehicle with registration tags (not the EXEMPT) is NOT LEO? I saw a police interceptor with the lights and spotlight but it had private reg tags from what I could tell.

Truly undercover vehicles are regular older vehicles with dirt, dents, bumper stickers and absolutely normal plates.
