Danica Patrick got the pole!

After 500 miles its respectable, and in only her 2nd attempt she finished ahead of 34 others... she did alright.

Speaking of overhyped, Dale Jr came in 19th, I don't think he'll lose his seat, either.

Dale has done a good amount of winning. He's not the greatest in NASCAR history but at least he has won a good number of races including a couple of drivers championships and a Daytona 500 race. Bad comparison IMO.

Lately the hype outweighs the record... he goes long periods without winning. Wasnt there a couple of years between his last 2 wins? He seems to be finally figuring things out with the "new" team, but is he worth the attention he gets?

I'm not a huge Danica fan, and yes, she garners a lot of non racing media attention for who and what she is, but she did alright for what, only her 2nd time in it.

I think you are thinking of Dale Sr... Dale JR has never won a championship in the premiere league. He won 2 Busch/Nationwide championships but no Sprint/Bud/Nascar Championships

not a fan of her, but was a little depressed that she got swallowed up at the end, after such a good run. from what she said after, while other drivers may cooperate with each other to a degree, she didn't feel she could count on any of that if she were to make a move.

She drove better than any guy there, all day long. Seriously...and I was a doubter at first. Course there's probably some Nascar magic going on a little too...but Danica was excellent on Sunday. Anyone who would claim any different didn't watch the race. She ran 3rd for most of the day until she got jumped at the 2nd half of the white flag lap, which is customary at that place.

keep in mind, winning isn't the only thing that can keep you in the big show. bringing in money will as well.

First time ever I knew who was on the pole for Daytona 500.
Usually I can't change the channel fast enough.
Didn't watch it this time either though.

Especially for qualifying, she weighs as much as Tony Stewart's leg....

Driving a Stock car ain't no easy thing. Being a guy is a pretty big advantage. One thing funny: Watching Kevin Harvick crash, he takes his hands off the wheel too and grabs the belts when the car hits...something the drivers made fun of Danica for doing when she first came to Nascar...now they almost ALL do it too.

It sucks getting beat by a girl...but not really when you realize everyone's just another position out there. Now a 16 year old girl? That was painful too, till she went out and won her Daytona race.

hell, if you are already out of control, no sense adding the potential for a broken wrist on top of the mix

That's because NASCAR can be slow to adopt established safety procedures used in other forms of racing... I've seen Alonso and other F1 drivers do it as well.

It's an open wheel thing...when the first thing to hit is the wheel (not the fender/ bumper, etc) it breaks wrists. Nascar Stock cars are built differently, but they still can break wrists AND they're alot looser (out of shape) over an indy type/ F1 type car.

No shit, right!

I agree with Berto she had a damn good run. Fun to watch. Guys accept her on the track as a capable racer. Pretty good show IMO. Enjoyed the race a lot. One of the few I really watch from NASCAR, the shear speed and guts of these drivers somehow impresses me. :teeth

She should have jumped in front of Earnhardt JR. on the last lap. Yea yea easier said than done but she had the fastest car and with bump drafting would have took her there past Jimmie for the win, for the most exciting finish in NASCAR history IMO.

Timing it right to get in front of JR. When he made the move to the bottom is pretty hard but racers' instinct and being aggressive, she should have known to do this. It was doable. I was watching her the whole way through. Being in third the last few laps i saw no signs of her wanting to overtake or some sign that she wanted to get ahead. She was stagnant and it showed when a few cars got ahead of her because of that missed opportunity that I mentioned.
