This is true; you need a mutlimeter and a 12v source, in addition to a few other things I'm probably forgetting. But at the very least, you can pull the plastic cover off (if possible, but I haven't seen many where it isn't) and check that the thing is physically sound.

It's sure as shit easier than running down every goddam wire in the loom, though. :laughing

I have to mention that I have more experience working on cars than bikes. Running down wires on a bike is probably annoying as fuck, but something that you can do in a reasonable amount of time. The same task on a car, especially my SAAB, makes me sick to my stomach. :p
