Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

OK, guys. My tax rebate is coming in the mail. I've decided to blow it all on camera gear. :thumbup. There really is an advantage to not having a girlfriend anymore.

I can't decide between the two:

1. More studio lights and batteries. (AB800 and AB1600 and battery)

Or

2. Underwater housing for my XTi. (I'm too chicken shit to take my 5dMKii under water)

I have functional lights now, but the studio lights would be more powerful and more pimp. But, I really really want to do more underwater photography. I have some professional ballet dancers lined up to do some underwater shoots with me this summer. I could rent the case, but that's still $200 per weekend, and I wouldn't know how water tight the used cases are.

I know that the studio lights are the smart way to go, but right now, the thought of doing more underwater stuff really excites me.

What do you guys think? Should I go with the studio lights or the underwater housing?

Studio lighting more versatile in the long run... I'd probably trust rental underwater housing from a professional rental place. Unless you plan on shooting underwater constantly instead of just one project...

^^^Yeah, I will definitely use the studio lighting more in the long run, but I think I will have much more fun using the underwater housing.

The reason I'm even thinking of picking one up is that it costs $200 to rent one for the weekend, but I can pick one up for $1,200. I'm more likely to use it if I own it vs. trying to decide whether or not it's worth $200 to me to experiment with a shoot for a weekend.

So, I've decided to go with the underwater case. Now I just gotta find a deep pool that I can use for the shoot....

How do warranties work on used cameras? Let's say opened box and 2 month old Canon DSLR.

Aris - if you haven't yet pulled the trigger on the case, I think you can probably get a Pentax waterproof P&S for less than the price of the case for the Rebel... of course, you're stuck with whatever glass is on it, but I seem to recall the specs were quite nice.

I could find that it's got manual focus and white balance - could not see if it had manual aperture control. Might be worth a look.

Also, Nick - been offered to shoot a wedding, but I've never been a main shooter at a wedding, so am thinking of passing on it. Would you like me to put you in touch, and I'd be happy to be a second shooter?

Also, where the heck were y'all yesterday! I walked around and around and didn't see anyone except Berto...

Ian, hit me with the info.

At any given time I was either under the EZ-ups with camo netting, stunting around on my GF's mountain bike, or out on track pretending to be a racer. :party

Hey Nick,

this is the gal:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1613396436

Tell her I sent you.

Main issue seems to be, it's a night wedding, and she wants minimal lights at the event, and has so far been turned down by most photographers.

I was thinking of renting a 1D Mark4 - the ISO up to 12K looks passable, maybe even 22K with a lot of post-processing filter stuff. The 5D is passable up to 6400, but that isn't enough for a dark pub (as I found out recently), even with an F1.8 lens, and then of course DOF and focus is an issue for portraits.

Sorry didn't see you - went right past your pit, thought that might be yours, guess you must have been out. Also missed Alex Florea and wanted to run into Ernie, but didn't see him either. Kept seeing Berto tho, and his girlfriend's butt was a standout from the back-row of the grandstand :teeth

Steve - sucks - I was at turn 2, in the grassy area, but not until about 2pm. Was in the grandstands and the other side up till then. Maybe next month? Not sure if I'm bringing my son - he liked it, but, he ran out of steam early.

I think I went home around 2 :p

If my friend racing next month (crashed 3 times this weekend..) maybe I'll head out again

Saber's is a cool store. I always get my camera clean there. They have a bunch of lenses and camera stuff.

I'm falling in love with film

The 70-200mm 2.8 IS II...

I rented once then ended up buying mine just before a judo tournament that I shot. I woulda saved a lot of money if I woulda planned ahead and bought it online before I needed it. :teeth

There's no question that the 70-200 2.8 is an awesome lens. I've used the mark I and it's great. It just comes down to, do you really need to spend that much?

I've used the 70-200 4.0 Non-IS and it also produces great photos. Some say the 4.0 puts out better photos than the 2.8... It's also a hell of a lot cheaper. Also a lot lighter, nice if you're carrying it around all day.

I have both. :teeth

I use the F4.0 in the studio where I can control the light or in bright light/sunny situations. But, if I know that I'm going to be shooting indoors or a sporting event with no flash, I use the 2.8 Mark II.
