It will move the flash off the camera...
Unfortunately, the SB-600 doesn't have a PC port, which is what you would need in order to plug in a cable directly from your camera. You'll have to get a $20 hotshoe adapter as well.
I'm pretty sure I mentioned this one drawback of the SB-600 some months ago when you were buying your flash
Edit: nope, I just found it. I forgot about that part, we were talking about master/slave flashes instead.
Wait a second... so lets say I want off camera flash with my SB600 and D70. What do I need? A PC cord? But you say the SB600 can't do it? (??)

Will that work in ambient light? Or will I need a cord? (if the SB600 can do that).
I am confused at what I actually need. Pretend I know nothing about this strobist stuff (which uh, yeah I don't). Give me an example of a beginner's off-camera flash setup, with one or two flashes.
