Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

It will move the flash off the camera...

Unfortunately, the SB-600 doesn't have a PC port, which is what you would need in order to plug in a cable directly from your camera. You'll have to get a $20 hotshoe adapter as well.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this one drawback of the SB-600 some months ago when you were buying your flash :laughing

Edit: nope, I just found it. I forgot about that part, we were talking about master/slave flashes instead.

Wait a second... so lets say I want off camera flash with my SB600 and D70. What do I need? A PC cord? But you say the SB600 can't do it? (??) :confused

What about this thing? An SU800. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/su800.htm

Will that work in ambient light? Or will I need a cord? (if the SB600 can do that).

I am confused at what I actually need. Pretend I know nothing about this strobist stuff (which uh, yeah I don't). Give me an example of a beginner's off-camera flash setup, with one or two flashes.

You need a cable and a hot shoe adaptor. It'd be easiest to take your gear to a camera store and verify what you get works. Work w the flash in hand for a while.

Yep. I do a lot of shooting just like that. Camera in right hand, flash in left held up high. Works very nicely most of the time.

Ahh. Were you the one talking about kids looking at the flash instead of the camera, Nick? Wonder if holding up the flash before holding up the camera would matter.

Yah, that was me. I've found that I get better results with the flash on the end of a folded up lightstand, it moves it further off-axis and the kids don't always try to look at it.

Took some shots today with my 85/1.4 and this setup. Nice lighting for headshots, and OMFG that lens is insanely sharp and clear. Here's 100% at f/8, look how nicely it defocuses as you get just a few inches back...I seriously need to use this lens more. Absolutely love how it looks, and I almost never freakin use it.

Edit: damn, the screen capture looks like crap. I'm gonna have to upload some of these.

Oh, I wanted to ask... does anybody out there have a Nikon 17-35 f/2.8 I could borrow? I used one on my D200 and F4 for a couple of weeks. It was nice on the D200, but awesome on the full frame of the F4. I really want to give it a run on the new camera sometime. :thumbup

Playing around with the F4 I recently picked up (sorry it's not digital SLR :twofinger)

For something I just took real quick in the backyard, I think it came out pretty well.

Completely accidental alignment of time-lapse highlights with highlights in painting:

Nice, I think you just discovered how much better print film is at not losing highlights than digital is. There would be no detail at all in that flower with a DSLR unless you intentionally dialed the exposure down about two stops.

And the viewfinder in the F4.....:drool gawd it's so beautiful. Have you removed the top prism and used it as a waist-level viewer? It's a trip.

I've taken it off and its pretty gnarly haha, almost looks like an LCD screen

Now imagine that 4" x 5" and you've got an idea of how wrenchingly beautiful the ground glass on a large format camera is. They're simply stunning.

Also...The camera will still spot-meter and autofocus with the prism removed. I did some ground-level work with my F4 and 85mm this way. This kinda stuff:

Cool. What's going on with that ripple transition?
