Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Save $ on the body and use it towards buying good glass. The D40 has enough features for an amateur photographer.

..oh and Nikon FTW :thumbup

Costco actually has the D40 2 lens deal for $550 right now............. I almost pulled the trigger on the D60 setup last night. But I kinda want to pay my car off too. :/

have you considered the D80? if you buy from Ritz online, they don't charge for tax (shipping is like $7 since they consider it a 'heavy' item). They have a promotion for the d80, which comes with a 18-200mm lens, bag, and some other goodies.

That's a cheaper 55-200 mm lens.

Man, too many options. I don't mind spending $800, but I'd like to get a good setup and get a good deal. Almost tempted to just do the D40 at $550 and call it a day.

That ritz deal is looking better and better. Plus they have locations in san jose if I have to raise hell.

i just looked it up and that deal is pretty damn hard to argue with. i figured one or both of those lenses would be quanteray (sp?) shite, but they're both nikkor. also, i have a nikkor with vibration reduction and i never use it. it's good for really low light situations like indoor nighttime shots, but for shooting action in california sunshine, i get better, more consistent results with the VR turned off. so if that is your intended use, don't worry that those lenses are not VR.

Ok, that's done.

D40 with two lenses on its way. :D

I can return it, if I don't like it.

Will do! I am going to DC next week and doing the "sightseeing" thing plus a wedding. Gonna take it there with me.

I wonder how useful those "armor" coatings are for this thing? I plan to start taking it everywhere.

After reading about that 18-200 AF-S VR lense, I want one. :X

Costs as much as the setup I just bought though. Shit.

it ain't worth it. i have one and it's ok at best. if you want it, i'll let it go for $500, but i don't recommend it. it's very fickle about lighting and not very sharp. it's versatile, i'll give it that, but not much more.

So, will I end up leaving the 55-200 VR lens on 90% of the time, or what? I don't want to walk around with 2 different lens all day. I don't plan on putting this thing in a bag, pretty much ever, unless its not being used.

+1 especially it being fickle about lighting

it prolly ain't worth whatever the price is nowadays, but the convenience and versatility is nice to have.

you probably know this already but just a reminder: please buy a filter to protect your glass

Camera advice please....

Because the BARF is the only place I go for advice here I am.

I'm looking to buy a camera that has interchangeable lenses, can be used manually or with an auto mode, is digital but uses a traditional viewfinder, and is in the $500.00 range. I really like Cannon because of their great customer support.

Basically I want something that I can learn and grow with, something I won't be embarrassed to take to my local Junior College's photography 101 class, and something in my budget.

Thanks, Beau

Canon's entry-level model is the Rebel XT, which has 8mp and an 18-55mm kit lens for around $530. A little cheaper, about $470 will get you a Nikon D40, also with an 18-55 kit lens. Either one of these cameras are a great entry-level introduction to their respective systems, and both offer full manual control. I'm biased towards the Nikon D40, as the included lens is considered quite a bit better than the kit lens on the Cannon. The difference between 6 and 8 megapixels is negligible.

My advice would be to go to a camera store (Best Buy is NOT a camera store) and try both of them out. See which feels better in hand, ergonomics, etc.

Both are capable of making fantastic images, and will serve you well. :thumbup

Beau, get an XTi - I am a BIG fan of the Canon EF (EOS) lens. Remember, you're not investing into the body, it's the stable of lenses that you're investing in.

I haven't been shopping for a couple years, so.... No help on model (I'm wildly in favor of Cannon. I believe they have the best in-camera processor, and just generally love the camera's).

I'm just wondering what you have in mind, for interchangeable lenses? In a $500.00 range.

A high mega pixel rating, and basic features of Photo Shop, return very good croping and enlarging, for ending up with what a Telephoto lens used to do.

And photo stitching returns what a ultra wide angle lens used to do.
