Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

... Oh, and where can I get a cheapie boom arm? I saw a rather nice (well reviewed) one made by Impact at bhphoto, but would like to support local shops...

Cheap? Hit up that place in Burlingame.

Lol! Don't tell me you work at Keebler and Suchat? Every time I've called there, and I'm looking for some 'thing' that I can get for $40 for just-ok-quality, they fire back with, 'Well, our budget range starts at $400 for that thing...'

Maybe it's just cooincidence for the things I've called them for.

Think I'll just get the 5' boom from bhphoto. But the missus says I have to get at least 1 person to pay me to take their pictures first...

So, we have:

Me (Ian)
Nick
Steve
Tyler?
Aris?
Bueller?

Bueller???

I'm up for something depending on the timing. Most of my weekends are booked until July. I have a 9-foot paper background and stand and a black cloth background that we could use.

fun with pchop.:)

Actually, change that deadline to about 15:00. I'll check for pm's when I get to the city.

I found some Super Clamps on craigslist. The seller has more than I need, but I'm willing to help teh BARFers. If anyone else is interested, let me know by 14:00 today.

Gah! Missed it. I would have been in for one.

I'm trying to figure out a rig for my bike, which has basically no exposed frame and the plastic isn't solid enough for a suction mount.

Does this look photoshopped to anybody else? It's not, but I can't help but feel like this guy is too well separated from the background. He just looks like he's pasted on, rather than sitting there. :laughing

Are you putting too much emphasis in lighting up the background?

That red hot poker looks sure makes me expect to see the guy sweating. But he's not. So to me anyway the background detracts from the portrait, if a portrait is what you were going for, because it competes for attention with him. Still good lighting on him, as he pops right out. His look though is not poserific. He's too self-aware of your camera, which means we don't get a sense of him at all.

did you pick up everything?

Yes! *Grinn*

Well, *almost* everything. There was one person to come after I left and they wanted two clamps, so I left two for them. The seller was a really nice guy (a Kiwi, maybe, dunno) who rides and he was envious 'cause his bike is out of sorts. He'd received the equipment as payment for a job, but I don't think he's a photographer. He'd been trying to sell them for a couple of weeks and I made him happy by taking it off his hands and telling him how to fix his dishwasher. ;o)

But, but, you're in luck! Yeah, I figured everyone that might be interested would have a really low chance of seeing the posts in the window I provided and if I could get the at about 1/3 of the new price, it just made more sense to get everything and see what needs we could fill (or create ;o).

Right now I've got three of Super Clamps on my bike and with a Magic Arm -- those sound like bands from the '70's! -- and I spent four hours tonight screwing around with them. I love it!

Well, no, not really, but I also know that's because I can see what's going on in it. In this Age of Photoshop though I do see what you mean. Can you fix it in PS by changing the white balance of him or the background?

I'm up in Oregon. Wokeup at 5:30am, started hiking at 6am to top of Spencer Butte. Was hoping for a sunrise, got this instead

Took a lot of B&W shots hope those come out well

Did you have any gels on the strobe, or did you just hit him with it nekid? Maybe a red gel to blend him in better with the ambient light would have helped?

Steve - GREAT pic! Love that.

Nick - feather the outline, tiny bit of Gaussian blur mebbe? Also try reducing the saturation of the background. I think it's the color separation that seems a little jarring. On the other hand, it's actually kind of a cool effect. You might be seeing it more than the rest of us as you remember what the scene looked like in person... it's not that obvious until you point it out.

UPDATE FOR THE LIGHTING WORKSHOP:

How does $20 sound? Free for Nick as he's bringing backdrops and lights :)

It looks like I have a semi-pro friend interested, who mostly does landscapes, who is bringing 2 additional chaps.

So,
Me
Doug
+ Friend #1
+ Friend #2
Aris
Nick
Steve
'Zypher'

That's 8 peeps - could be a LOT of time for Ana, hence the increase. Still DIRT cheap for modelling time. I'll supply tea and biscuits. Maybe one of my wicked Chilli's or Curry's :teeth

Lemme know if that still sounds reasonable. Won't be this weekend, not sure if next weekend is possible yet - might be April...

EDIT - could interested folks PM me their digits and emails, I'll forward address stuff and details. Probably just create a passworded web page for y'all. :)

Room for any more? I was way into this idea from the beginning and would like to be included.
