Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

I'm out if I have to pay anything. I thought we were just getting together to pool our knowledge and resources. I don't want to pay for a model.

Because models normally cost a fortune.

If it's that much of a sticking point, we can do one with just our ugly mugs to shove in front of the camera, but it would be nice to come away with something potentially saleable for minimal outlay.

EDIT - Tyler's in. I musta screwed up copying and pasting the original list, sorry man!

what $20? i thought it's just a lil gig with no model...i can bring my stand and diffuser....

Did you have any gels on the strobe, or did you just hit him with it nekid? Maybe a red gel to blend him in better with the ambient light would have helped?

No, I probably should have gelled it a bit, but I didn't really have time. The lighting setup was the same as for the portraits with the chair (overhead softbox, now up high to camera left) but I was shooting a different direction while they were interviewing.

Nick - feather the outline, tiny bit of Gaussian blur mebbe? Also try reducing the saturation of the background. I think it's the color separation that seems a little jarring. On the other hand, it's actually kind of a cool effect. You might be seeing it more than the rest of us as you remember what the scene looked like in person... it's not that obvious until you point it out.

UPDATE FOR THE LIGHTING WORKSHOP:

How does $20 sound? Free for Nick as he's bringing backdrops and lights :)

I only have lights, no backdrops. In for $20 as long at it's after April 1 (starving artist :laughing)

If I had pasted him on, I could probably do that. :p The color separation is too powerful, I think I should have gone maybe a stop faster with the shutter to dial back the background. I'll probably desaturate the oranges and yellows a bit.

And Steve, awesome. I love the quiet, subtle images like this. There's so much going on in there, but you have to look for it.

If anyone is interested, I helped my bud build a backdrop (for portrait shots) with PVC pipes. Super cheap and easy to build.

i might do it that way...i seen a diy on a pvc backdrop stand...but thinkin bout how sturdy and portable it is..

I actually like it. :p Another simple solution is to have him wear a jacket or change to a darker shirt, sweater, ...etc. If he wore a leather/dark jacket and sunglasses it would've made a very cool portrait. :cool

Nick, zypher, anyone else, who wants a clamp of either sort?

As for backdrops, for now I'm just using my spare light tripods with a shower rod between them, and clipping flat sheets between them. Works quite well.

My bro in law has a backdrop setup with a coupla backdrops, he should be able to drop it off this weekend. He barely uses it. I might invest in a black, white, gray and maroon backdrop.

Update on the lighting/modelling meet - almost certainly going to be mid-April. Every weekend is booked solid till then...

Yes. What one(s) did you get?

I have:

Too many Super Clamps. They look like the image, but are an older design. They are not painted (so you see aluminium) and do not have the plastic triangles next to the small thumbscrew.

Too many Clip Clamps. Again, not black. One doesn't have a thumb screw.

Two L-Brackets, also not black

One Matthews copy of a Super Clamp, black

One Matthews copy of a Clip Clamp, black

I also have some extension tubes, but I'm debating about keeping them.

Super Clamp
Clip Clamp
L-Bracket

Maybe if the lighting agreed a bit more with the background lighting? :confused The flash lighting looks very different and I think maybe that's what's making him feel separated from his environment.

Still, it's a cool photo though!

Impromtu photo shoot with Ana. Nothing too risque as the Missus wasn't there. Ho hum. Probably just as well, I have a *lot* to learn about lighting backs, apparently. All in the recyle bin.

Anyways, here's a head shot she wanted of her looking respectable:

Yup, lighting blacks can be tough. Gotta separate her from the background, she blends too well in the first picture. Either backlighting of some kind to give a profile that's lit or getting the b/g completely dark, which is tough in a small space. Especially with umbrellas, which are basically light grenades.

Anybody have a dead flash they want to give away to me? I'm looking for just the foot for a project.

Most recent article on the webmag I'm shooting for is up. And my site has been changed somewhat, to be more professional and less links to family & friend stuff. I'd love some input/advice/scathing criticism. Thanks!

Got a laptop you can take to Skips? It'd be much easier / faster in person.
