Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

So I've been bit by the Strobist bug and now I am reverse-engineering light in every picture I see.

This one puzzles me.

Can anyone identify the lighting source/type? The cheekbone shadows are very sharp. I would guess the light is direct, almost on top of his head. What confuses me is there are no shadows under his eyes. Is it being filled? Is it just one light or two? Maybe I am over thinking it. Maybe it's just one spotlight and the shadows under his eyes are there, but not very pronounced. :confused

Note: this is a screen capture from a video, so you're looking at continuous light, not a strobe-lit scene.

a honey comb grid might have been used...

That's my take as well, based on the falloff of the light towards the edges of the spot.

Additional evidence attached below.

CANON for sure! I love my Canons and they never let me down. Don't know about the whole 'Busa thing.... Guess a 'Busa is like my Canon 70-200mm IS Lens - BIG AND HEAVY! :)

42mm? :wtf never even heard of that size. Sure it's not 52mm? Not mine, either way.

[lens lust]

So I've been shooting the last 2 weeks with a borrowed 70-200, and my god, this lens is simply astonishing. Wow. I so can't afford one right now, but it's going to be difficult to hold off once I have to give it back. I love the way it looks on the full-frame body too, the sense of depth in all the pictures is something I've never really experienced before. I love it.

No update, Doug is back tomorrow, tho we've talked, he's definitely up for it. Just dunno when. Not this weekend.

I'd like to get the white backdrop stuff sorted first, that means a little moving of stuff in the garage on Doug's part. Then maybe a test shoot before we bring folks over.

And Nick has to come this time :twofinger

okay sunday im going to have AB units for a day...only sunday...lets set something up quick...who has triggers? i got cybersync..if you have another cybersync trigger we can make this work quick...

Zypher - unlikely I can make it, unless you want to take pics of my 3 year old... I haz to be on kid-duty for a few more weekends to make up for my 2 weeks without them while GF was in MN.

But, depends when, where, how long etc. Doubt I could bring a model :(

I could bring my trigger tho? I also have some spare cables if you're desperate.

Nick - sounds good! Those weekends are booked for me anyway.

Will probably try ordering the paper backdrop soon, forgot I had a nice surprise from the CA taxman. Seems a worthy investment if I can get but 1 paying gig out of this backdrop.

And, here's the cap I found. I've never had a Nikon, so I'm guessing it must be leftover from the Ana shoot. Maybe someone dropped it when she took her top off? :rofl

Do you have a place or model to shoot? If I don't go to the AFM Races I might be able to go. I don't own any triggers though

The only other Nikon stuff, besides mine, was your friend with the large format camera, he had Nikon lenses, so maybe it was to one of those

This was from last night's shoot. I guess I've been spoiled up til now. Everyone that I've shot so far already knew how to pose. This was this girl's first time doing a photo shoot. This was just a random practice shoot that I did to test out some lighting ideas that I had. I only had so many ideas on the poses. I guess there is something else I need to learn.

But, the good thing is that I have another lighting trick to add to my bag o tricks.

By the way, this was my first decent lenth shoot since I modified the Cactus triggers. I was happy to find that I had ZERO mis-fires the entire night.

the glare of the flash is a bit distracting...if you can blur the background it might help out...

Thanks for the feedback, but I think that's a personal preference type of thing because I actually like the light reflecting off the background glass blocks.
