Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

I think that this video summarizes almost everything you need to know with post processing with a white background:

edit: and I use the curves thing all the time to help me show any parts that haven't been cleaned up yet. I just push the curve to darken the shit out of everything to show you any spots on the background that need to be cleaned up.

Thanks man.

Sheesh, can't believe how many hours I've wasted trying to carefully 'cut out' people or gently airbrush shadows so the photo doesn't have a harsh edge, and I coulda just used the same tool I've been using all along anyway.

I feel like the guy who fell into a bucket of tits and came out sucking his thumb.

Still, you've saved me hours of pain for my future white-backdrop shoots, can't thank you enough :thumbup

Yea when I've shot stuff indoors with a flash, I found bouncing the flash usually gave good results. However, theyprobably are going to be shot outdoors though. Got a few ideas in my head, we'll see if it works... I also have no idea how many there will be :p

Okay, plan B. Set the lights up on opposite sides, position them far away (20-30') crank up the power (and/or bump your ISO a notch or two), and watch for shadows.

15 min setup, beauty dish overhead with softbox to my right, had them line up so they were about equal distance from both lights. after 5 pics, they had enough fun and went back to talking. 10 min to take it all back down, weee :p. At least it'll only take a minute to edit all the pictures

oh, no, talk about even more boring. i needa practice directing people for sure, i'd take a shot, look to see if it came out well, and they'd already be doing something else before i could say 'fix such and such.' oh well, didn't really take too much time

This was one of the first pics I took with the nifty fifty, I still can't get over what a crazy value this lens is:

RAW WHITE BALANCING!

Quick question.

Lets say I'm using CS and shooting in RAW. I take a reference shot of something gray then shoot my subject. How do I use the little dropper tool to select the gray card on the reference image when the photo I'm trying to white balance is a different image (obviously). It seems like Photoshop is only allowing me to open just one raw file and the dropper tool only works with the open image. What am I missing?

open with camera raw!..

open with camera raw!..

Let me explain...

Right or wrong, what I have been doing is 1) opening Photoshop, 2) dragging the file from explorer to Photoshop. It seems to automatically open Adobe Camera Raw.

How should I be doing it?

And how do I use the "white balance dropper" on another image other than the one I am editing?

open on adobe bridge, then select images, then open in camera raw...there a bunch of thumbnail on ur left hand side then do it by syncing the files

Is Lightroom better than Photoshop for this?

It's what I use. It works great for stuff like white balance and exposure adjustments, minor touch-ups, etc. I'm just too cheap/poor to buy PS, and I don't feel right using a pirated copy. Intellectual property and all. Kind of important to a photographer. :thumbup

Zypher's advice sounds good, for what you're doing. PS does have some pretty good batch processing features, I just don't know how to use any of them. :loser
