Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Ok, moving the date back to August, sometime. Just too much going on in July between everyone it seems.

Will let y'all know.

Steve, could you ask Noah for me? Maybe if I waved a naked Ana in front of him he'd come down, lol!

Yeah, it's a busy month here. August will probably be more flexible. Like trying to herd cats around here. :laughing

And Tyler, thanks. I'm flattered. Not really much of an expert, I have no formal training or anything. I've just been playing with lighting for pretty much as long as I've been shooting. Picked it up early and hit the ground running.

So you're street wise instead of book smart. Big friggin' deal, you still know a lot more than I do. :) Besides, I don't want to be 'that guy' bumbling with experimenting with the lights when there's a nude girl in the room. ;)

My thoughts are this:

1 hour minimum per $100 donation, which is actually about the going rate for a nude model anyway, but you get a write-off.

You're also getting a studio (ok, 'garage', but hell, it's big and clean enough to qualify) and lighting use - AND Nick telling us all what to do.

For the shoot itself, 15 minutes per person, then break for the model.

During the break, we can arrange larger changes in lighting/backdrops/clothing choice (unless you want to do all totally nude, s'up to you).

Incidentally, 'nude' != 'porn'. Just sayin.

15 minutes should be enough time for smaller lighting changes and lots and lots of poses.

The only downside is the backdrop lights for the all-white backdrop have a cycle time of ~3 seconds, so you can't get a gajjilion poses, or shoot a bunch 'around' a pose unless you ask Emily to hold it. So, dynamic stuff will be relatively hard to grab.

Of course, the main lights on low - which allows for bigger apertures, means <1second cycle times.

If Nick brings his, I'm guessing their performance is better.

Emily wants a 6-photographer limit. She has no issue with MUA's, reflector-holding chaps or chapesses being there.

Gawkers not really gonna be welcome - everyone there needs to fulfill a function.

So far it looks like, for payees:

Doug
Tyler

We need at least 1 more to do this, ideally 4-5. I will probably sit most of it out in return for organizing, or jump in at the end if she lets me.

i say go to the studio in fremont on Joseph St...just bring your model and pay the 2 hour rental fee...and you're set...you also learn alot cause the guy teaches you what you need to know...and you dont have to take turns since he has alot of triggers available...save time so you can save money from the model...

In the nicest possible way...

READING COMPREHENSION FAIL!

It's a CHARITY shoot. The model is donating everything to either www.calapr.org, or at least to http://www.arme.tv/ and then back to Calapr.

All donations will be tax-deductible... :)

Calapr is my/my girlfriends charity, just waiting IRS non-profit status. Ironically, the State has been far more on-it and we've had that for MONTHS. Grr.

This is entirely a for fun, learning, low-key kinda shoot. That said, I do want people to get max value for money, hence no paying for studios, as that just sucks right out of the donation pot.

Besides, the seamless white backdrop is actually pretty nicely set up, and there's tons of room for everyone. And Doug has a nice backyard BBQ setup for socializing between turns.

For lights, I've got the two SB-800's and a trio of pocket wizards, everything can be slaved off everything else seven ways to Sunday. And Tyler, how kind of you to allow me be "that guy" bumbling with a lightstand with a naked woman sitting there. I guess since I noticed the 4x5" against the back wall on the last one. :nerd :laughing :twofinger

I'm flattered that I've somehow been nominated our chief lighting guy. I'll try to live up to the billing. :laughing

I've also got my 2 Alienbee B800's with triggers or using them as slaves with stands and some modifiers. Noah said he may be interested, just let us know when you finalize it all

Here's my fun from Saturday:

Can I post a few non-DSLR shots? Took the ex's $150 retarded pocket cam with me camping last week. Pretty much the only controls are an exposure adjustment, which seemed to work best about -0.7 ev to keep the sky from blowing out. Nothing to do but wait for good light, pre-focus, and hope for the best. I do like the macro mode though. Much easier with a P&S than a big camera. :laughing

wee i've got a mini gig. a family friend has a friend who is a real estate agent who needs some shots for a house she's listing. got in touch with her and she asked for my help. quick job, house is in my same town. should be interesting.

Morning or evening twilight, tripod, wide lens, balance the ambient with some warm light from the inside of the house, and you're golden. :thumbup

Aris - really like that second shot!

Nick - still better pics than a lot of people take with a 5D mkII :p

Steve - well done! If you were down here, I could hook you up with a realtor. Unfortunately, she already has a dude, and he's cheap and good. Bastard.

Well, OFG's party is the 8th, the Lucy Thank You party will prolly be the week after.

The 1st I have rellies in town.

That leaves the 23rd August - 22nd is taken with yet another family thing.

Shannon says she'll do receipts for everyone if they pay by check, or you can Paypal.

I'll go ask Emily if the 23rd works - how many does that work for?

23rd AUGUST, that is.

ugh, photobucket seems to really kill quality of pictures...

what do you all use? smug mug? flickr? whats the better option

Flickr is good, I use Zenfolio for mine, because it lets me keep everything organized, control access to different galleries/images/etc, and I use it for client galleries to order prints, post pics on forums, share via email, etc. It also allows you to upload and manage watermarks, and change them without having to re-upload pictures or anything.

There's a free trial, and I've got a $10 off referral code if you decide to sign up.

Had to check. Premium. Either has unlimited storage, but Premium allows custom watermarks, more printing options, price lists for customers, etc. Mostly the advantages over Unlimited are if you're going to be selling directly through your website.

Here's a painfully detailed list: http://www.zenfolio.com/zf/pricing.aspx
