Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

I am really liking the 24-70, and now almost never leaves my camera. I'd say 90% of my shooting is done with it, and 9 of the remaining 10% with the nifty fifty.

Here is one of my current favorite shots:

I saw a video recently with a photography effect I've been meaning to ask about.

It is somewhat difficult to explain, but imagine a normal portrait setup--and this is video here--and the background zooms in or out. The person retains the same size/perspective but the background... it feels like the person is on wheels, being pushed or pulled through a scene. I've seen it used in movies at key moments to emphasize drama.

Anyway, I have always wondered what's going on from a photo/optic standpoint. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Yes, it's used in horror movies a lot, most notably "The Shining", when the twins are in the corridor, I seem to recall.

It's really very simple - you just zoom in as you move the camera back, making sure the zooming in is 'cancelled out' by moving the camera back at the same rate to keep the foreground the same size, but the perspective of the background changes a lot.

It might be zoom out as you move forward, but I'll have to go and look at that scene specifically.

yea, zoom in or out and move away or closer. would be tough to do freehand, would definitely need some sort of rolling stand to keep it smooth

i have a photo class tonight at 7...let me know if you want to go...i can bring 1 guest with me...

depends what your price range is.

i like the 24-70 but a bit pricey. then again what L lens isn't?

I finally bought mine yesterday... I'd been waiting for SO damn long to get it.

New toys:

Canon 580EX II flash
Battery Grip
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L

Waiting on the grip and lens which will be here next week. Got the flash yesterday. I didn't fully understand the value until last night... wow.

I guess it depends on how you use the flash. Ever since I started off camera manual flash, I'm more than happy using my dirt cheap Vivitar 285 flashes. I still have my EX430, but I rarely use it because it goes to sleep after 30-seconds of non-use. That makes it a royal pain in the ass in my photo shoots where I use off-camera flash. I now have 4 Vivitar 285's that I bought for less than the price of 1 580EX II. (even including the price of the Cactus trigger and 4 receivers, I'm still ahead.)

Well, to be fair, I'm going from the on-camera all the way to the 580EX, so I can't speak much about the mass amounts of options in-between. I'm sure that you can get results just as good if not better for the same money going other routes, but in my case, I just wanted to go with what I knew would exceed my skills (as per usual BARFer purchase decisions :twofinger ).

A buddy let me borrow his 580EX II and I was too impressed with it to shop around too much more. It should make the myriad of weddings and work events that I've been shooting WAY easier.

Yeah, if you're just going to keep the flash on the camera, you're golden. I went through that phase myself with a Gary Fong light sphere on top. You'll do fine with it. The 580 has a lot more power than the 430.

I just had issues with the TTL functionality because it was not as consistent as I would have liked. I ended up putting on manual after a while.

Yeah, I have a LSII Cloud on the way as well for those times when a ceiling isn't going to help. It should work great. And for now, everything will be on-camera.

The TTL stuff will come up down the line and we'll just have to see how it turns out. By the by, if you're looking for a cool local photog that uses the shit out of lighting, check out Dustin Diaz:

Thanks. I saw dustin's stuff when a link was posted on strobist q while ago. Good stuff, but I think that I have a different syle and taste than he does. But, I do like how he puts the lighing set up info up for every shot.

edit: By the way, I think that one of the best local photogs is Jennifer Skog: http://www.jenniferskog.com/

She has a fantasticly subtle lighting style. And, she really knows how to make women look beautiful in her budoir shots. I'm hoping to head this direction eventually, but it's hard for guys to break into legit budoir photography because it's hard for woment to feel comfortable with them. That's why I'm looking for a female makeup and hair person to work with.

So, for now, I'm happy to get paid to do dance photography.

This one was from last weekend's shoot:
