Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Hey, quick question about manual focusing. My d70 has a little green light in the viewfinder that lights up when the subject is in focus, even with focusing manually (pretty cool, I just found that out! :p It takes the guesswork out of "oh, is it really in focus? It's hard to tell in this little viewfinder"). If I put a manual lens on it, like an old Nikon AIS prime or somesuch, will the little green light still light up when I focus manually?

I am thinking I need to splurge on the 580exII or get a manual for the external flash I got for free. The 24-70L definitely suffers in low light conditions taking pictures of people in motion, and I have not been able to really get the flash sync down for good exposures. The 580 is supposed to do just about everything automatically, and is almost infinitely adjustable. I need to get my hands on one and play around with it.

What flash did you get for free?

wannabe, what was the power on the flash?..maybe it can work out...i can tell you this, at iso2000 on 5d2 you get a grainy photo and at f2.8 you need to be at a good distance to get that DOF, enough for just your subject to be sharp...are you using lightroom to organize your photos?..and have you tried any iso grain reduction?..

Yes. It will also meter in spot or center weight modes with the manual lenses. :thumbup

Awesome!

Old primes don't sound so bad now. :)

I really want something with a good reach and a wide aperture so I can blow out my backgrounds. The 70-200mm from Sigma @ $700 seemed like the only way, but if I can get a nice crisp focus with old $100 to $200 glass--and I'm not shooting anything moving fast--maybe an old Nikkor lens would do the trick. Woot.

Ohh man, I just came across this and I thought I would share. This probably doesn't impress you veterans but to me it does. Since we were talking about cheap primes, I thought I'd dig around Flickr. One was taken with a Nikkor 105mm AI-S f/1.8 and the other with a the $5,000 Nikon 200mm f2.0. Of course one certainly looks better than the other, and of course you're probably familiar with Dustin Diaz's work, so it probably isn't a tough to figure out which is which.

...but damn, check out the bokeh on that old glass! Mmmmmmmm

I know the guy that did the second shot. :p

Wedding next week. Renting body, 24-70, and a long lens (because I sold mine :cry)

70-200 is $58 to rent, the 200 f/2 is $134. I've used the 70-200 many times, but I'm sorely tempted to spend a few extra bucks and try out the big gun...:)

Nice! All of his stuff is great. I think I stumbled upon it earlier this year when perusing strobist tags on Flickr.

I've got his stream bookmarked. I want to run out and shoot every time I check it out. Really good stuff. And that 200mm f/2.0 is :wow :drool

Tell him to let me borrow his 200/2 on the 29th. :cool

I don't know him well enough to borrow stuff :p just met him at a party at his house a few weeks ago.

Besides, I'm brandcist and can't help you nikonians get better pics! :twofinger

Nah, went with the 70-200. On a pretty tight budget, and can't really afford the difference right now.

I will definitely post up some pics though. :thumbup
