Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

No problem. Just gimme a pm or a call if you still have my number. Place is a bit of a shit-tip at the moment, one of the dubious benefits of using someone else's space... but hey, it's free, so, price is right...

Ah! Crap!

My sigma telephoto just broke. When I rotate the zoom ring nothing happens. I think its stuck around 80 mm or so. Anyways... These type of issues fixable or am I now the proud owner of a paper weight.

Anyone getting the Canon 7D?

I prefer that my camera DOESN'T shoot video :), so no probably not, it isnt a bad camera though. Had a chance to play around with one a little. I still prefer my Mk3 :)

does the video feature take away from the cameras still capture abilities?

nah. It's an upgrade for anyone on a T1 or XTi, something like that. Small sensor, but you get video and (more importantly, to me at least) LiveView.

I'm still holding out for whatever the equivalent to the 5d Mk. II is when I'm ready to upgrade.

Does the 5D and 7D share the same image processor?

If I remember reading correctly, the 7D has two Digic IV processors as opposed to the 5D Mark II's one Digic IV processor.

That said, I'd love to get a 7D, but as of now, I cannot afford it, and I'm nowhere near pushing the capabilities of my 30D.

Who wants to learn about using flash? Send me a PM, i can take 3-4 people with me!..and this is FREE...

Noise question...

Shooting with a D70 I bought used a year ago on Craigslist. For the most part, it has really served me well. Lately though I have been concerned about noise. Is it possible for noise to worsen or am I just becoming a more sophisticated photographer?

I shot some flash stuff this evening at ISO 400 and it seemed visibly grainy, particularly in the darks when I underexpose. See my examples below. Is this normal? I could dig up some examples where I can see streak marks.

What do you guys think?

Here are the details for the photo:

ISO 400
29 mm
f/8
1/500

EDIT: It looks like you might have to click them to see the correct resolution.

This. Don't do it. ;)

Yes, the D70 shows these kind of noise characteristics in dark areas, even at ISO 400. Consider that if you push it +1 stop in post (fill light, exposure adjustment, etc) you are now at an effective ISO 800, possibly worse depending on the quality of the algorithms in the image editor you're using.

why not shoot at iso 100 when using flash?..you can use slow sync using flash and still get the nice light from the background...@ 1/30th iso 100 and maybe at f4-5.6...

I tried my first time-lapse this week. It went OK, although I did learn a bit to do differently next time. This is about an 8 hour period of time or so.

This was the second half of the same day during a little wine and cheese thing we did

one thing you should do is set manual exposure/focus, so it doesnt kinda go in and out.

i have a remote to do time lapse, i just havent gotten around to it...

Yup, that was one of the first things I determined after run one. Set everything to manual. The effect it gives isn't terrible as-is, but manual would have been much better.

I have a remote that would do the same, but the issues that arise there are:
1. Storage space (a 2GB CF card will fill up real quick when you're taking hundreds of pics)
2. Battery life - The same DC converter I'm using would solve this.

I preferred using the laptop to this as opposed to the remote, as I have all of the images going into a folder, which is sync'd with dropbox, to make running out of space on my drive (for example when using my hackbook) not an issue.

Plus, reviewing on a large screen helped.
