Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

This. Don't do it.

Yes, the D70 shows these kind of noise characteristics in dark areas, even at ISO 400. Consider that if you push it +1 stop in post (fill light, exposure adjustment, etc) you are now at an effective ISO 800, possibly worse depending on the quality of the algorithms in the image editor you're using.

Doh. :D

Ok, I'm just glad it's not the camera. It's fascinating how much lower noise these newer cameras (D90?) have. I've been so caught up in the "fast glass" mantra, I can really see the value of a body that'll let me shoot an ISO that is an effective 2-3-4 stops higher and still be reasonable! Is my logic correct here?

why not shoot at iso 100 when using flash?..you can use slow sync using flash and still get the nice light from the background...@ 1/30th iso 100 and maybe at f4-5.6...

Because my D70 won't let me shoot at ISO 100, that's why! :toothless

Here's a funtime panoramic of Tokyo Bay from my recent trip to Japan:

Adds video capability, another stop at the top of the ISO scale, and a bigger buffer, along with some firmware tweaks.

I'm hoping for a D700s(or x) to push down the prices on the regular D700's. :D

exactly, i have no reason to upgrade yet, but once d700's go down in price i may take a look...

Obama Family Photo By Annie Leibovitz Released [WARNING: high resolution ahead]:

The more I look at it, the more I love it. Leibovitz's perfection is subtle here.

On a technical note, EXIF data is still embedded into the photograph! Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. :cool

f/8, 1/125 @ ISO 400 and NO FLASH!

Am I silly to wonder why a superstar photographer--really, a living legend--isn't shooting a presidential portrait with a Hasselblad H4D-60 or something similar, instead of what appears to be easily less than $10k in gear? Or, GASP!, film? I've read enough of Ken Rockwell to be certain film would have been better for this historic shot. :p

EDIT: Also, it appears to me that she perhaps shot JPG at 16.6 MP... ?? (and cropped down to 4096x2731) Unless she made a big crop from 5616 x 3744/21.0 MP RAW (why?)

I just came across this guy's blog and had to share it with everyone. He calls himself an amateur, but you be the judge. I guess you're technically an amateur if you don't do it for a living. A "guy with a camera", he certainly is not. I probably spent an entire hour scrolling through all of his blog archives. He's serious about this. He somehow acquires stunning models and among other things, fronts $600-800 to rent rooms in boutique hotels for photo shoots.

While most of his stuff is SFW, some is not:

Might have another camera in a week or so. Not a D700 by any means, but light is light, and I'm stoked that I get to play again.

I'm thinking ride and shoot tomorrow somewhere in the bay... if anyone has suggestions or is heading out.

I was just at Costco fiddling with the D3000 and D5000. One thing that shocked me: terrible auto-focus speed! Really, I'm not much of a camera snob--all I know is my D70. The AF seemed so slow, it felt almost as bad as a point and shoot. The D70 is WAAYYY faster. Why is this? Is it because of the body or my kit lens? (Even my 50mm 1.8 is faster, driven by the motor in the body.)

I'll definitely be taking this into consideration when I upgrade to my next body. This makes me even happier with my decision to buy a 4 year old prosumer body instead of the entry-level D40 for the same price. All kinds of little high-end things like this have been worth it (on camera master flash trigger, in-body AF motor, nice kit lens and now faster AF, among other things).
