The Rim, Tire, or both? :p

ZTR Olympic 7000 rims with Raven tires ?

I was just refering to the Crow tire, which I used in the rear at CCCX #2 and won.

The Raven is the same with taller side nobs on the sides. I would run that up front for hard pack.

I assembled my own ZTR Olympic, 26er, DT spokes, DT240 hubs and I run them tubeless with Stan's. That makes for a really fast, really light CX race wheel. :thumbup

I need some bike maintenance advice:

What's the best way to get sand off my drivetrain? I have a new chain that really attracts sand. I try to wipe it off with a rag but it just pushes it between the links/rollers. I've tried to get the new chain grease off the best I can but it's still attracting sand like none other--really makes for an un-smooth feel.

Thanks in advance.

The grease that comes on chains is designed to preserve the chain on the shelf and should be cleaned off before riding. IT will take a couple clean/oils cycles before it is all gone.

I used paper towells, paper napkins that I would normally trash to clean the chain. If I dont have that I use desposable blue shop towels from Kragen. Try a bit of WD40 as a cleaner.

Then I use cardboard from the recycle to clean the chainrings and cassette. ITs self cleaning, so do it over a garbage can or a drop cloth or a towel.

Then I recomend Rock & Roll or ProLink as lubes, because they clean as they oil and junk does not stick to your chain.

Break the chain, (take it off the bike) fill a plastic ziploc bag with environmentally friendly (but heavy duty) degreaser, swish it around and really work it in with your fingers to break down that nasty-ass cosmoleene shite! Once you've sufficiently broken down the giz, dump it into an oil drip/drain pan (that's what I use) then attack it with a good stiff bristle (plastic/not metal) scrub brush until the giz is completely cleaned off. Should clean right off now with water or mild dish liquid. Get as much of the water off as possible, insert into your microwave :twofinger Haaa just kidding, but I do stick it into my toaster oven on about 100 degrees to completely dry it off. Reinstall on bike with a sram quick link (whatever they call those little buggers) and Viola!! No more sand giz :teeth

Thanks for the advice, guys! I haven't removed a chain from a bike since my BMX days some 12 years ago--has anything changed or do I just use the chain tool to push the pin out most of the way and then push it back in upon reinstalling? You mentioned a "sram quick link" above. Do chain nowadays require a new masterlink or a new pin like a moto chain when you break them?

It's the stock Shimano chain on my XTR drivetrain if it makes any difference.

Thanks again. It sucks when my brand new bike rides worse than my old bike with its 7 year old drivetrain!

I'm heading out the door to UCSC/Henry Cowell right now for my first ride there since their big ticketing campaign--wish me luck! :teeth

Go to any bike store and get the Sram master (quick) link. Push the pin all the way out of the old chain. not only is the Sram master link the next best thing since sliced bread but now you don't have to figure out how far to push the old pin out, hoping that it doesn't fall out completely. The only difference is when you are done and go to put the Sram link on to join your chain, it will join 2 female ends of the chain, rather than the old pin that joins a male and a female end. (this means that you will have to remove a full link and a half from the existing chain and replacing it with a one link. If this sounds confusing now, ... just do it!! As you are doing it and looking at the actual piece and how it works it will become crystal clear.

Totally interested. I got into mountain biking when I went to college in Oregon, but I haven't done any riding in the bay area since I've moved back here.

How light?
Disc or rim brake?
32 or 28?

I just built the same (with 32 DT super comps/240s disc/819) for XC though, not CX.
Are those ZTRs strong?

These are the ones that you said weigh 1800 grams right? Can't wait to use mine, the hubs seem really smooth, I'm confused why mine weigh 2100 grams though since their identical. O well with some fast rolling tires I hope to not notice a difference
