Do You Mountain Bike?

Bartlett Springs Rd.

Thought I'd share a couple pics from one of my regular rides up here in Lake County. Bartlett Springs Rd. is a dirt road that climbs up in to the Mendocino National Forest from Clear Lake. The views are awesome and I only see a couple vehicles in a normal 2 hour ride. It's a fairly easy but long climb (good for training) and the ride back down the mountain is a blast:teeth.

Goddamn Dan reignited the mtn biking fire under my ass. I'm down to ride my fucking museum-worthy steel hardtail with all you crazy full-suspension fools. If I pass any of you on the downhills you owe me beer. ;)

I happen to know a guy selling a pretty decent Full Suspension bike, and it's at the shop getting a new set of tires put on it as we speak type...

Really... contact Harpo

he's got a whole stable of bikes he bought for a steal in the dead of winter and has cleaned/tuned them to make a little extra cash in the spring.

Alright, please excuse the stupid n00by question.

I've got an 06 Gary Fisher Opie Hardtail thats been treating me pretty well. Within a year I'll be going full suspension (I bought the hard tail for commuting to school and back and to see if I was committed to riding). Well, I am :)

I added disc brakes to the Opie but thats the only upgrade I've done (besides peddles). Since its a el-cheapo hard-tail I don't want to drop a ton of money into it for new derailleur, head stock, etc etc. But, lately I've been getting my ass kicked on the mountain (the "suspension" might as well be non-existent). Even with pre-load all the way soft I can't get more than 2 inches of travel out of it, and its beating me up). I'm tempted to buy a better fork in order to extend the life of my bike a bit. If I can find something used in the $200 range on eBay or something, what sort of a) fitment b) travel c) issues should I be looking for?

Go for new tires first.

Tires and wheels will give you the best bang for your buck.

I'd recommend a lightweight, high volume/low pressure, XC tire. Something like a WTB Mutanoraptor 2.4 or a Continental Race King 2.2

The extra volume acts like second suspension, they grip fantastic, and roll fast

If you want a fork also, look for something in the 100-120mm range. 100 will probably be your best bet as the 120 can make the bike handle lazy if its designed for only 80mm. A fox float is a pretty reliable fork but $200 is at the low end in the price range for those
