Dodge to discontinue Charger and Challenger

I don't know where you got the idea they aren't popular in the bay area. Those things are fucking everywhere around here :laughing

Anyway, I read somewhere else that they were considering bringing them back as EVs. Though it might have been someone's comment, so don't quote me on that.

Oh, they've been going on about eMuscle for well over a year now. There definitely will be replacements in some form or another, their Hornet CUV being the first of them.

That just seems NUTS. I see them EVERYWHERE. They must have sold a million of those cars.

Here are some figures that I found for the Charger;

In 2019, there were 96,935 Dodge Chargers sold in the United States. That is an increase of 21% over last year's totals and one of top best years to date, trailing only 2013 when 98,790 Chargers were sold in the U.S. The best classic year was 1968, when roughly 96,100 Chargers were sold.

Lots of hwy patrols and popo use the charger.

What car will now meet their fleet requirements?
- American made
- powerful engine w/normal ice range
- 4 door sedan

Doesn't have to be a sedan. CHP and other agencies are using Ford Explorers now so I'd expect to see SUVs replace sedans for this purpose.

We live near a fairly large public housing complex. The parking stalls have a charger/challenger every 5th spot. They go up and down the blvd at full chat at all hours. It seems like there are no sensible drivers of these models. Racing on the freeway is common too.

I know it confirmation bias and my jaundiced eye but I won’t be sorry to see cheap V-8s depart the driving culture. Or all be converted to manual transmission types. Then enthusiasts would represent to majority of owners.

The Hornet is a re-badged Alfa Romeo.
Here's a chance to get your Alfa owner credits! (demerits?)

This was a bit interesting from Dodge’s start of their “speed week” event. Nothing terribly new, as there have been people paying big money to have their Challenger converted. Just notable because now you can order it this way from the dealer and it will come with a full warranty.

The cowl shake express here. The aftermarket conversion does add some braces under the hood, but you know this car was never designed to be a convertible, so it will be very flexy.

I don’t think this is nearly as nice as an actual factory convertible, but this is Dodge at least listening and giving some customers what they’ve been wanting. Definitely not nice is the $26k charge for the conversion.

Thank goodness poor credit rating buyers still have Nissan.

Speed limit should be limited to 10% of the buyer's credit score.

Altimas doing 41mph on the freeway.

Glad to see the other douchebag car mentioned, but Altimas are more-frequently quieter. You do notice them by the speed though

This may be the driver of this decision...
But tighter emissions standards forced the automaker to reimagine its lineup and buy carbon credits from cleaner manufacturers. Stellantis, previously known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, said in a March 2021 earnings call that it spent $362 million on such credits in 2020, mostly from electric-car maker Tesla, according to CNBC. European energy regulations allow companies that struggle to meet emissions benchmarks to buy carbon credits.

Dodge will retire Charger and Challenger, its muscle car mainstays

I know they aren't that popular in the Bay Area, but here in Fresno they are very popular along with Mustangs.

No, they are very popular in the Bay. You see them everywhere.

Dodge announced this like a year ago though, I am very curious to see what their electric platform will look like. Dodge hadn't been able to make money selling cars for YEARS till these major cash cows showed up on their roster, they had to live off of truck sales.

I bet their eSport offering will be killer.

The 5th gen Mustang warmed the motor for the return of American Muscle, but the arrival of the Challenger blew the doors off and thankfully has brought us this new 2nd golden age of American Cars.

The fake “revving” they were doing at the launch event was utterly ridiculous. That said, I don’t mind a bit of fake noise inside and out. It adds to the sense of speed. The Taycan’s spaceship-like noise is very well suited. This futuristic auto tuned sounding fake V8 thing that Dodge just did…not so much. They said up to 126db. Really? 126 of bullshit? At least they’re continuing the tradition of every V6 Challenger I come across having some garbage sounding straight piped exhaust.

The fame noise thing is just flat out stupid. One of the best things about an EV is how quiet they are. If they can also switch off all running lights at night, that is a huge draw of the vehicle, but I have heard many of them cannot move in the dark with all lights shut off.

For the blind community, the lack of noise is a real problem. I'm all for EV cars having some 'fake' engine/exhaust sounds.

That Charger concept looks badass.

Lots of hwy patrols and popo use the charger.
My singular complaint about their popularity is the styling. I think the Charger is a bit aggressive, particularly in police livery. Far cry from Town Cars and LTDs.

It just goes on top of the more militaristic garb some officers wear on patrol.

Just be nice if they could dial it back. I think the Explorers look great.
