:rant Riddle me this: Why are Prius drivers such aggressive, tail-gating, no-signaling, bad-driving assholes? Does driving a car that's good for the environment give them a license to be shitty drivers? :rant

They were drafting behind you to be even more green.

Check out the South Park episode "Smug Alert" for laughs on this topic (S10 Ep2).

Could you please generalize a little more? Let's throw in "Why are minivans always driven by cell-phone chatting soccer moms" and "why are pickup trucks always driven by rednecks who don't know WTF a turn signal is" and "why are sportbikes always driven by irresponsible 25 year old males"?:twofinger

I don't have a hybrid, but sure see plenty of them on the road. The Prius drivers, IMHO and experience, *tend to be* (and this is a gross generalization) more predictable and careful than other drivers, even if they often *generally* do drive slower. This is not as true as it used to be, as more people get them they tend to be just like other cages. However, unlike a lot of the POS on the road, I can see over Priuses and they don't take up a full lane, so I like them.

I'm pretty sure that's how the aggressive ones think :|

It's one of those subconcious psychology things. "I'm saving the environment! I'm such a great person!". Then, they can "allow" themselves a few indecencies because, you know, otherwise they are such great people.

The irony is it's been documented that people who do something "green" and congratulate themselves or allow themselves to feel good about it, wind up being less green than the average Joe because of these "allowances" they give themselves :rofl

They think because they get such great gas mileage that they can go faster and still get great gas mileage. = asshole (maniac) drivers

I'm not sure I understand why people hate on Prius drivers?

I say hogwash.. hate something worthy of some real hate..

Crackheads..

You gotta watch out for them damned crackheads pulling a train of shopping carts! They pull into traffic like they're driving a car.. and they leave the cart in the middle of the street.

Even the most souped up crack head can only pull a train of 6 carts @15mph. :p

sheesh! :laughing

Agreed...

I've seen one Prius having this attitude yesterday... :mad

prius + asian/visor/gloves/breathing mask = they will kill you!

The same reason cyclists (the suburban commuter type) are. It's actually a scientifically described phenomenon. They feel that they are doing something good for society, so they subconsciously decide that they can slack off in other areas.

Some people enjoy driving. They buy cars that fit their needs, have a pleasing ride, or an engaging driving experience. Many other people only drive because it is the way to get to and from work, lunch, school, etc. They do not care what they drive other than the most practical benefits their vehicle provides like gas mileage, reliability, and resale value. We shall call this type of driver a dingleberry. The dingleberry does not care about their car other than the basic transportation it provides, and generally does not invest any energy into good driving technique, or higher levels of driving education. The Prius offers inexpensive, practical driving with the added social badge of "hybrid." This attracts the dingleberry who otherwise has no interest in any added features or benefits that a sporty car, truck, or suv may provide. Thus giving the dingleberry a social high-horse to ride, and an easy out in the "what do you drive" conversation often encountered in the real world. The dingleberry can not fathom riding a motorcycle, and is generally not inclined ponder the perspective of a motorcyclist or sports car driver. The dingleberry has been known to be interested in politics, talk radio, cultures of impoverished nations, world music, and special yogurts. The dingleberry does not enjoy excitement, adrenaline, violence, or pizza.

In regards to the OP's statement, a lot of it is how our brains work in determining threats (and really, why we stereotype).

Your brain (well, the lizardy parts) wants to do a threat assessment and so when it sees a Prius doing something asshattish, it files that away. Then it looks for more similar data to corroborate this data. But Prius drivers being benign don't trip any alerts in your brain, so it is discounted. If you collect enough data points of a Prius driver being stupid, your lizard brain says "eezzz bad...avoid! AVOID"

This worked well keeping us little mammals alive when we were likely to be eaten by something. Doesn't work so well socially.

Dunno, but I've noticed that there are most bad drivers who own Priuses than other brands. Sure there are lots of dicks on the road, but I happen to notice that a good chunk of them drive the same type of car.

This happened to me yesterday. Coming from Brotherhood to get onto 19th Ave/280 South, there's that short onramp followed by a quick merge. I hate that merge when I'm taking it and when I'm in the right of way traffic. I always slow down and almost stop until I can see the oncoming traffic. While I was doing that yesterday, I was getting honked at by a fucking burgundy Prius. Seriously? So if I get rear-ended because I'm trying to rush my merge and let you go, are you going to apologize for pressuring me? Doubt it.

Seriously! When I used to drive on 5 fairly often it was either some minivan or suburban utility vehicle that would go blowing by me at 90+.

Oh wait, there was a second paragraph?

I'm interested in this. You say it's a scientifically described phenomenon, do you happen to have any links to published results of an experiment? I'm not trying to be a troll here, I'm genuinely interested (psychology major here, no surprise :nerd)

OP, I would say that any of the crazy prius drivers are actually more likely to be younger kids whose parents are letting them drive the prius. More often than not, I feel prius drivers are fairly considerate and safe drivers.

Prius drivers are the Devil..! It's scientific fact..! :twofinger

I can't seem to find the study I read about greenies using more extra energy than they conserve. Example being install flourescent lightbulbs that use 50% of the power, and then leave them on all day instead of 20 minutes. It was an article from the UK, that's about all I remember... but here are some other studies:
